Reports indicate that American businesses seeking guest workers may be suffering from their own lack of skills or initiative. But it turns out that hiring domestic workers is a job Americans will do.

More evidence that the guest-worker solution has become part of the domestic hiring problem: Businesses tell Politico that the threat of audits might lead them to recruit American workers.

Our immigration system has been constructed as if employers should never hire teenagers again. If Andy Puzder were a teenager today, he probably couldn't get a job at Baskin-Robbins -- much less be entrusted with opening the store.

I have my fair share of criticisms of how immigration is covered by the fourth estate. Chiefly, the media's tendency to frame the debate as a binary choice between "pro-immigration" and "anti-immigration" (as if immigration policy was a light switch) leads to a lot of bad habits that breed misinformation and mischaracterizations. Hey, if immigration were that simple why did the Gang of Eight need over 1,000 pages to "reform" it?

Years ago, a New York Times editorial offered some words of wisdom: "Unlimited immigration was a need, and a glory, of the undeveloped American past. Yet no one believes America can still support it. We must choose how many people to admit, and which ones." How many? Which ones? They are both necessary questions.

In praising President Obama's decision to end "wet foot, dry foot," the New York Times described the decades-old policy toward Cuban migrants as "misguided" for encouraging "Cubans to embark on perilous, and often deadly, journeys on rafts across the Florida straits and across borders in South and Central America."

The campaign to delegitimize Senator Jeff Sessions barely reared its head on the first day of his confirmation hearing.

Politico reports: "Potentially ugly hearing becomes more of a love-fest" with even those Democrats who challenged Sessions complimenting him as a colleague and a friend.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
