Poll: Most GOP Voters Will Not Support Incumbents Who Vote for Amnesty

A new National Journal poll found that 49 percent of GOP voters say they will be less likely to support their incumbent lawmaker if he or she votes for a path to citizenship for illegal aliens. Only 15 percent of Republicans would support the incumbent who backs a path to citizenship.

These poll results come after 15 Republican Senators voted to pass the Schumer-Corker-Hoeven amendment yesterday. The passage of this amendment will make it easier for the Gang of 8 amnesty bill, S. 744 to likely pass the Senate.

Rosemary Jenks, director of government relations for NumbersUSA, a group that opposes that bill, said the amendment brokered by Hoeven and Corker does little to help secure the border, and actually provides new loopholes that could weaken border security and allow future unauthorized immigrants to get U.S. citizenship.

She said the Senate passing the immigration bill is not the inevitability that many are making it seem.

“The bill’s idea that more immigration will put more Americans to work was supported by only 24 percent of union households, 23 percent of Catholics, 14 percent of Evangelicals, 8 percent of high school grads, 14 percent of both conservatives and moderates, 18 percent of independents and 13 percent of Republicans,” read a statement from NumbersUSA, which sponsored the poll.

NumbersUSA is an advocacy group that seek to shrink the annual inflow of 1 million immigrants and 700,000 temporary guest-workers.

"NumbersUSA notified all our members this morning asking them to call their Senators to oppose the Corker-Hoeven amendment which is a desperate political move by pro-amnesty forces to provide cover to pass a bill that would otherwise not pass," Roy Beck, president of the anti-immigration group NumbersUSA, said in a release. "The amendment still allows the bill to give amnesty work permits and legalization before any additional enforcement."

Roy Beck, president of a group that opposes the immigration reform measure, called the compromise "a desperate political move by pro-amnesty forces to provide cover to pass a bill that would otherwise not pass."

The amendment "allows the massive increase in foreign workers that the CBO says will lower American wages and increase unemployment," said Beck, president of NumbersUSA.

The Senate Gang of Eight’s amnesty bill, S. 744, is an invitation to terrorists (and criminals) from around the world to come on in. The first thing that happens under the bill is that immigration enforcement is stopped dead in its tracks.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said today that an immigration bill is unlikely to come to the House floor if it does not have the support of a majority of the House Republican caucus, according to The Washington Times.

This move by Speaker Boehner will make it much more difficult for the Senate Gang of Eight's amnesty bill to become law.

A new CNN/ORC International survey found that 62% of Americans say border security should be the main focus of U.S. immigration policy, while only 36% say a path to citizenship for illegal aliens should be the top priority.

According to the poll, more than six in ten Americans say border security is a bigger priority than a path to citizenship for illegal aliens.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
