No Independence Day celebration of self-determination without immigration rules -- or more milestone dates than July 4

On one of the more difficult Independence Days of my life (how about yours?), I want to think more deeply about what we are celebrating. Or at least, what we should be celebrating.

Perhaps we could be less disunited during our 4th of July celebrations if we could think of the holiday as commemorating the aspirational start of a process that continued through many other wonderful dates in our history. I'll name five others.

If it has seemed for 30 years that powerful forces have intentionally prevented the rule of law in an orderly immigration system, LOSING CONTROL is a new book that tells you how it was done.

I know a lot of this story. I've worked on the issue full-time since 1991, and was a reporter covering it before that. But I learned a lot of new details from this book, enough that they kept me from skimming and kept me reading every word for each new revelation.

Immigration-driven population growth is devouring natural habitat in the United States, threatening wildlife and biodiversity. This raises ethical questions about our responsibility towards our non-human neighbors and surroundings, but we also have a naked self-interest in arresting immigration-driven population growth in order for wildlife and biodiversity to thrive. Writing in The New York Times Magazine Ferris Jabr says we have altered the natural world to a point where zoonotic diseases can spread to humans more efficiently than ever.

Bob Good -- who filled out NumbersUSA's candidate survey and promised to be a True Reformer on 12 top immigration goals -- has unseated incumbent Republican Congressman Denver Riggleman at the Party's primary convention.

A key issue in Rep. Riggleman's defeat was the charge that he was a close ally of business lobbies in their desire for more foreign workers.

Agriculture, development, and population growth

A recent study shows that scientists have underestimated the amount of land and water needed for agriculture, which is further complicated as the United States loses three acres of land every minute to development and has areas such as the West and Southwest facing increasing droughts and declining Colorado River water reserves.

Advances in agriculture make it possible to yield higher amounts of food, but the best and most fertile land is being lost to development in both rural and urban areas. As a result, the ability to grow the best crops in a sustainable manner with the least amount of water becomes more challenging. Technological advances will offer temporary solutions, but the issue will only be exacerbated as our population grows to over 400 million by 2060. Our population growth is driven by immigration policies set by Congress that must be reduced in order to alleviate pressures on our land and water supplies.

There are 40 million in the U.S. out of work, and many businesses that are beginning to re-open are operating below the capacity they were before the coronavirus shutdown. What does this signal for immigration expansionists? The urgent need for more foreign workers.

Did all those who died in foreign lands this last year, as well as in America near our own borders, accept the possibility of the supreme sacrifice for just some vague concept of a country?

Amnesty has become a politically-charged term over the years, which has resulted in Members of Congress, activists, reporters, etc., jumping through hoops to try and prevent the term from sticking to their bill of choice. Let's break down the definition . . .

The Center for Immigration Studies released a report this week based on data from the federal government's Current Population Survey. This survey gives detailed information about the nation's unemployed. No surprise it shows U.S.-born and immigrant workers both lost jobs in large numbers. And highlights that the last thing the U.S. needs is more foreign workers.

Immigration is driving U.S. population growth, and will continue to account for almost all population growth over the next forty years. We need to think about the effects of growth when we formulate immigration policy. One of the effects is continuing sprawl, and the loss of habitat for wildlife.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
