Arizona employer sanctions law goes mostly unused

The ballyhooed Arizona employer sanctions law that went into effect on Jan. 1 has been largely unused, a new University of Arizona study found.

The 27,617 firms signed up for E-Verify is up from nearly 19,000 in July 2007, but still represents only 5.6 percent of the estimated number of total firms in the state, Gans found.http://www.azstarnet.com/news/271160

Cleaning Firm Used Illegal Workers at Chertoff Home

Every few weeks for nearly four years, the Secret Service screened the IDs of employees for a Maryland cleaning company before they entered the house of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the nation's top immigration official.

The company's owner says the workers sailed through the checks -- although some of them turned out to be illegal immigrants.

Official Accused of Hiring Illegal Immigrants

A federal official with the job of overseeing immigration enforcement in three New England States was charged last week for hiring three illegal aliens to clean her Massachusetts home. Lorraine Henderson is the Boston area port director for the Department of Homeland Security and was caught counseling her housekeeper on how to evade deportation, but the housekeeper was bugged.

The Washington-based publication Congressional Quarterly featured NumbersUSA's call to suspend most legal migration in light of recent U.S. employment statistics. In Roy Beck's blog from December 5, he called for "limiting immigration mostly to nuclear families and our fair share of internationally recognized special needs refugees" as a logical response to declining economic numbers.
