Eleven Attorneys General and Sixty-Eight House Democrats Challenge Arizona Law

Eleven Attorneys General and 68 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives joined the Justice Department in opposing SB 1070, Arizona's 2010 immigration enforcement law, as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear oral arguments in the case. 

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed an amicus brief supporting the Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona.

Rhode Island lawmakers are considering two E-Verify bills designed to prevent the hiring of illegal aliens in the state. The bills, introduced by Peter Palumbo (D-Dist. 16, Cranston), are scheduled for hearings held by the House Committee on Labor at the Statehouse tonight.

Two Central Florida Counties Requiring Contractors to Use E-Verify

Two Florida counties - Orange and Lake - now require companies to check new hires using the E-Verify system before awarding them a county-funded project. Orange County is the fifth largest county in Florida and the 35th largest county in the United States.

A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 60% of likely voters think that when it comes to the issue of immigration reform, gaining control of the border is more important than legalizing the status of illegal workers who are already in the country.

Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, which wants to reduce immigration, said Brown's bill will end up hurting American workers of all races and ethnic backgrounds.
 
"Why would you want to bring in 10,500 more foreign workers at a time when we've got 20 million Americans who either can't find jobs or are forced to take part-time jobs when they want to work full-time," Beck said.

Kansas House Sends E-Verify Bill Back to Committee

The Kansas House of Representatives sent a bill back to committee after it was amended to require state agencies and most employers that do business with the state to use E-Verify. The amendment would have required any business with a state contract worth more than $50,000 to use the workplace verification system.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
