I'm quoted in Sunday's New York Times as the sourpuss amidst what the headline says are "Liberians in New York ‘Jubilant’ at Expulsion Reprieve." Why would I say that Pres. Obama made a mistake in halting an order for the Liberians to go back home to a country of poverty and high unemployment? The Times quoted me fairly with a two-paragraph explanation, but I need more space to explain why doing something compassionate for these particular Liberians ends up being the opposite of compassionate overall. . . . .

Today's news reports on Pres. Obama's visit to California include a touching interaction with an ex-convict who has lost his job. But his comments about making sure that illegal aliens keep THEIR jobs illustrates the common occurrence of really smart people at the top of our government who just don't get it. They don't understand that there are a limited number of U.S. jobs and that when you fill those jobs with foreign workers (including illegal ones) American workers lose out. Look at what happened . . .

We’ve had tremendous response to Roy’s blog analyzing Tuesday’s disappointing 50-47 vote in the Senate with more than 135 comments since it was posted that evening. Senate Republicans tonight stood unanimously with unemployed American workers in voting for a long-term extension of E-Verify to keep illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs. However, all but 7 Democratic votes were for continuing a series of months-long extensions to keep the future of E-Verify in doubt. And that was enough for a 50-47 majority to table Sen. Sessions' latest attempt to assure states and businesses that the federal government will continue to provide this essential program for opening American jobs for American workers. But in this temporary defeat, we see many signs of winning the battle. I'll tell you the reasons -- and which Senators were the biggest disappointments. . . .

Nevada Voters Want E-Verify -- Will Their Sen. Reid Give In To Them?

A Zogby poll found that it is difficult to locate anybody in Nevada who doesn't support the E-Verify program to keep illegal foreign workers out of jobs. Yet, Nevada Sen. Reid has been blocking a long-term reauthorization of E-Verify for months. Friday, he finally gave in and said the Senate can vote on the program, but insiders say to watch out for a parliamentary trick that will block the vote at the last minute on Tuesday.
