A newsletter I subscribe to sent out an alert last week entitled "Evangelical Leaders Unite on Just Assimilation Immigration Policy." With heightened interest I began reading about how the law in Arizona is a response to the federal government's failure, that we need a rational immigration policy, that we are a nation of laws, and that we needed a solution that is neither amnesty nor mass deportation. I was excited because this is what I believe, until I realized that it was just a trial balloon for an alternative to the word Amnesty: Assimilation Immigration.

Yesterday, the respected Pew Research Center released a new poll showing Americans are backing Arizona's recently passed immigration enforcement bill, SB 1070, by huge margins. According to the poll, seventy-three percent of Americans agree with "requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them.”

All of us at NumbersUSA can easily become focused on what's wrong with America. We believe immigration numbers are way too high and that illegal immigration is ruinous to the country.

Hello, NumbersUSA members. Jim here.

I've been reading through (and answering) emails you’ve sent me lately. Many members have shared heartbreaking and hair raising tales of out-of-control immigration. Especially illegal immigration. Thought I'd share a few of the 100–200 emails members send me every week.

From the "everything’s broken" department:

One small favor from this disastrous recession: slightly fewer reporters are mindlessly scribbling down the phrase, "jobs Americans won't do." Over four hundred NumbersUSA members wrote to me personally after my latest fundraising email. About 275 of them are unemployed. You wouldn't believe all the jobs that they used to do and would very much like to do again.

Last Tuesday, I wrote our members asking for donations so we can continue our faxing operation. For the very first time, I thought to put in an email address, so members could contact me directly. Scores wrote, including many who are unemployed and on the edge financially. Take this stirring message from Frances:

I want to thank you (NumbersUSA) for giving regular Americans the ability to participate in our government via your website, especially at this critical time in our American history.

A few weeks ago as I was running to catch my ride home after a long day at the office, an old lady asked me for $5.00 to buy dinner. "$5.00 for something to eat? Please? I'm hungry." I was literally running as she asked me, and I told her, "I'm sorry, maybe next time." Then my conscience started eating at me. I kept hearing the words ringing in my ears, "For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat." I turned around, pulled $5.00 out of my pocket and ran back to find her, but she had gone.

This week a member of my team came to me and reminded me of how desperate we are for two new database machines. For those of you that aren’t familiar with techno-speak, a database machine is essentially a large storage container for information. As we post more news, blogs, articles; as users post comments; as we store more information about bills so we can produce the Gradecards and Profiles; as we provide more faxes, phone alerts and other actions to your Action Buffet; as we store each member’s log in credentials; and I could continue this list, each of these pieces of information have to be stored.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
