Last year, demographer Arthur C. Nelson of the University of Utah predicted that the population of the United States would hit 1 billion sometime during the years 2100-2120. After analysis, it looks like a perfectly reasonable estimate to me.

An Illegal alien graduated from Harvard this June. A sob story newspaper article bemoaned his lack of options, stating that he thought that the Dream Act would be law by now. The reporter neglected to mention that the Harvard alumni network is over 1,000 strong in Mexico, and includes the current and former presidents of that country. This guy should be able to find a good job, legally, in Mexico.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor ordered a criminal alien’s deportation case reopened after the alien missed a filing deadline. It seems that she forced the case to come out the way she wanted by interpreting a court rule in his favor. But her ruling places an added burden on court clerks and makes it more difficult for the court system to function efficiently. Her ruling also makes it even harder to deport immigrants who have committed a violent crime.

The confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor is now virtually assured for the U.S. Supreme Court. What might we expect from her in immigration-related cases? Attorney Charles Breiterman has reviewed the immigration cases of her past decisions and offers this first assessment.

Frederick Douglass on Cheap Labor

This blog features an article by Frederick Douglass from the August 17, 1871 issue of his newspaper, "The New National Era." America had its cheap labor lobby back in 1871, and it has one today in the form of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, ImmigrationWorks, and Bill Gates himself testifying before Congress for more H-1B visas. Frederick Douglass attacked the cheap-labor lobby's "fair-seeming phrases" immediately in the first sentence. We all know that today's cheap labor lobby has similar "fair-seeming phrases" that I will not repeat here since they are all over the mainstream media. The issues that deeply concerned Frederick Douglass in 1871 are very relevant today.

The business lobbies that have been so successful in keeping our immigration laws from being enforced operate out of the same motives when they lobby against environmental laws: profit. And if they can get away with it and secure amnesty for illegal aliens, then we have to be very concerned that the process can be repeated versus any law, including the environmental laws.

On Thursday, three illegal migrants were in a Florida hospital, one in critical condition, after a raft carrying some 30 people capsized off the coast of Florida. Sixteen people were rescued, and the rest are presumed dead. The United States Coast Guard has also conducted a search for other survivors over 2,500 square miles of ocean, which was still ongoing and expanding as of this writing. Autopsies of the recovered bodies were to be conducted.

An individual located in the Midwest who has a master’s degree, and is working towards a doctoral degree made the following assertions on her web site: 1) the United States promotes and fosters immigration from nations that are mostly composed of white Europeans; and 2) the United States attempts to cap immigration from Hispanic nations and nations that are majority non-white. If one educated person has these misconceptions, then many others may share it.

Over the past 20 years, the United States has granted legal permanent residence (green cards) to an average of more than 1 million persons per year. And compared to other nations, the United States is above average in terms of immigrants per thousand population.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
