Improve Border Enforcement

The Department of Homeland Security reported in December that they reached their target of 18,000 border patrol agents protecting the land and sea borders of the United States, most of who are stationed along the U.S.-Mexico border. The border patrol uses a variety of tools to deter and apprehend smugglers and potential illegal immigrants, including using dune buggies to combat drug smuggling on the California-Baja California border, mounted patrols to combat human smugglers, and helicopters equipped with thermal imaging devices to find illegal alien convoys at night.

It's been almost a year since the Supreme Court upheld an Arizona law that requires all businesses in the state to use E-Verify or face penalties up to and including the suspension of its business license. And on Wednesday, the state heads back to the nation's High Court to defend its immigration enforcement law, originally known as SB1070, that's come under fire from the Obama administration's Justice Department.

Politicians usually reserve Fridays to release news items for which they don't want a whole lot of media coverage. Last Friday, the Department of Homeland Security released its annual estimates of the illegal-alien population in the United States. The number remains mostly unchanged - DHS estimates that there are 11.5 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. as of January 2011 compared to 11.6 million in January of 2010. But several things stand out in this year's report.

The Center for Immigration Studies and NumbersUSA, another group that wants to slow immigration, pegged Romney early as one of the most consistent GOP candidates on the issue. "Everything is about attrition through enforcement with him," NumbersUSA President Roy Beck said in December.

From ‘attrition through enforcement’ to ‘self-deportation’

Numbers USA, an organization that promotes and organizes around attrition through enforcement, writes that “the goal is to make it extremely difficult for unauthorized persons to live and work in the United States. There is no need for taxpayers to watch the government spend billions of their dollars to round up and deport illegal aliens; they will buy their own bus or plane tickets back home if they can no longer earn a living here.”

Last week, the American Conservative Union held its annual conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C., offering three days of speeches from Conservative pundits, Members of Congress, and, of course, the GOP Presidential Hopefuls (minus Ron Paul). CPAC organizers are staunch supporters of free markets with leanings toward open-border policies and a more generous guest worker program. But the more than 10,000 attendees at this year's annual conference showed a preference for lower legal immigration levels and tough immigration enforcement.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney won the nation's first test for the 2012 GOP Presidential Hopefuls on Tuesday finishing with just 8 more votes than former Senator Rick Santorum in the Iowa Caucuses. Rep. Ron Paul finished third followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Governor Rick Perry, Rep. Michele Bachmann, and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman. In our ratings of the Presidential Hopefuls, Romney has a C-minus grade, ranking second behind Bachmann.

Austin, Minn.

A new report from a Minnesota newspaper, the Austin Daily Herald, shows that enforcement measures taken at the local level are indeed reversing illegal immigration trends. A combination of factors, including police checking immigration status to businesses scrutinizing documents more during the hiring process, illegal aliens are finding it harder and harder to live in the state and are repatriating to their home countries.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
