On December 16, 1773 there was a revolution in the Boston harbor. On November 2, 2010 there will be a revolution on Election Day. It’s Tea Party time in America. In the Senate alone, the Tea Party earthquake hit Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Kentucky, Delaware, Alaska, and Florida. But where do these anti-establishment candidates stand on Immigration issues? Where do these 7 key Senate candidates stand on Immigration Reduction? Reading the Tea leaves reveals an uncertain future.

Immigration Reform? Divide and Piecemeal

Congress is back in action on Capitol Hill for a busy 4-week session leading into the 4th of July recess. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is on track to move an energy bill to the Senate floor and is supposedly pushing immigration reform aside for the moment. But don’t be too sure. Keep your eye on the DREAM Act and Ag Jobs amnesties. Add them together and you have a genuine full-scale Amnesty that would add well over 3 million people.

A week ago, the NumbersUSA Local Power Teams successfully coordinated a 25-state Senate office visit effort, sending a strong message to key Senators to stay away from the Reid/Schumer/Menendez amnesty proposal. Nearly 500 activists in small groups of 3-4 drove a national message into Senate offices to “oppose the amnesty proposal” circulating in Congress. Let's keep the visits happening.

I received 10 emails from NumbersUSA members who questioned us about going to Tea Party events in Boston and Washington D.C. this week to advocate immigration reductions. We distributed 10,000 fliers (see contents below) on the High Costs of Mass Immigration, and we passed out thousands of Immigration-Reduction Report Cards across the country. While not everybody is a fan of the Tea Party efforts, I believe most of our members get the big picture that 90% of Tea Party supporters oppose illegal immigration and want to stop amnesty. Most of our members understand that to achieve our immigration goals, we need broad coalitions -- such as reaching out at Earth Day activities during the coming week.

With Congress still home for Spring recess and President Obama out trying to explain Health Care to the American public, the NumbersUSA Local Power Team has methodically delivered thousands of Immigration-Reduction Report Cards to grassroots activists across the country. Over the last 3 months we've updated our Report Cards that rank and grade Congress on their actions to reduce or increase overall immigration, and just recently added the ability to easily print the Report Cards for delivery to your local District Offices. We are rolling out our new campaign called “S.T.O.P. AMNESTY in 2010! Target: State by State” over the month of April. This is just the first step. The NumbersUSA Local Power Team will be attending Town Halls, protests, Earth Day events, community meetings, marches, Tea Party rallies, demonstrations, and District Offices. Print your Report Cards out here.

Victory and success often carry complex consequences. The health care win could be prescription for Immigration Reform defeat. With 25 Million Americans out of work, Pres. Obama and Congress need to do something popular next.

On October 13, 2009 Congressman Luis Gutierrez spent millions of dollars for his Amnesty launch party in 20 cities across the country. In quick response, the grassroots www.againstamnesty.com website was set up for the Tea Party Against Amnesty events that took place in over 50 cities this past weekend on November 14, 2009. There were fireworks in Pasadena, California.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
