Voters without college degrees outnumber those with by 2-to-1, and their political allegiances have been shifting. Polls indicate that the realignment is about to accelerate, and immigration appears to be a major factor. The managerial class, meanwhile, presses on with policies to give the investment class greater access to the global labor force.

One of the head-scratchers about the 2020 presidential election is that immigration was almost absent from the race. Why did President Trump decide to largely ignore an issue that was so effective for him in 2016? Now that the dust has largely settled, immigration is now getting a good deal of attention from the political commentariat about what comes next.

Viewers of cable news networks the first of this week will have a number of opportunities to hear the uniquely commanding voice of the late civil rights icon Barbara Jordan pronounce that there is "no national interest in continuing to import lesser skilled and unskilled workers to compete in the most vulnerable parts of our labor force."

Historian Christopher Browning Out of His Element When it Comes to U.S. Immigration Policy

Christopher Browning, a professor of German history, published a long essay in The New York Review of Books. The topic wasn't a book review but a vituperative attack on President Trump, including a denunciation of those, Trump supporters or not, who seek to restrict immigration. It is shockingly shoddy work by someone of Browning's stature, and any effect it may have will only serve to inflame political passions.

The blatant contradiction between Donald Trump's answer to a question about H-1B visas and his own policy paper was one of the most talked about moments of the CNBC Republican debate Wednesday night. Senator Rubio was also flagged by fact checkers for a statement that ran contrary to his record. Of the two, only Trump has attempted to clarify his position.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its monthly jobs report on Friday in advance of Labor Day weekend, and BLS reports that nonfarm employment increased modestly by 173,000 in the month of August. The number looks good, but it represents a 30% decrease in new jobs from the previous two months.

The weight of Donald Trump's front-runner status and his detailed plan released over the weekend tipped the balance among the Republicans' 2016 Presidential field so that the dominant position now is that immigration policy is a jobs and wage issue.

And he joins several candidates in raising the question in one way or another of whether LEGAL immigration ought to be reduced.

Several candidates had already been advancing the idea in recent months that federal policies on LEGAL immigration are not serving the interests of the American worker.

The Black American Leadership Alliance hosted a march through Washington D.C. on Monday, protesting the Senate-passed amnesty bill, S.744. Breitbart.com provided live webcasting of the event and estimated around 3,000 people attended. They heard nearly four hours of speeches by Black Alliance leaders and others, including Senators Jeff Sessions and Ted Cruz and Representatives Steve King and Mo Brooks.

The march and rally focused on how amnesty and high immigration levels hurts low-skilled American workers and their wages.

The good news about Mitt Romney's pick to be his vice presidential running mate is that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) doesn't seem to have put a lot of thought into immigration policy and doesn't seem to have deep ideological reasons for his poor immigration record during his 14 years in Congress.  Our Grade Card on him finds him throwing about half his weight toward protecting American workers and taxpayers from bad immigation policy -- and throwing the other half of his weight behind immigration policies that hurt American workers and taxpayers.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
