Sen. Ted Cruz introduced the Senate companion to H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act. The legislation was passed by the House of Representatives in May and would require all employers to use E-Verify, close asylum loopholes, and end the Biden Administration's abuse of parole for illegal aliens, among other things. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), JD Vance (R-Ohio), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), and John Kennedy (R-La.) are original cosponsors.

NumbersUSA strongly supports the efforts of the House Judiciary Committee and House Republican Leadership to end the border surge through the passage of the Border Security and Enforcement Act of 2023. This bill fulfills the promises that Republicans made last year in their Commitment to America to take the steps necessary to secure the border.

You may have heard from some circles that the Biden Administration is proposing to ban asylum and that it is an example of President Biden adopting policies of former President Donald Trump. These critics either have not read the proposed rule or believe even attempting bureaucratic virtue signaling to deter migrant flows at the border is forbidden.

The Biden Administration's latest budget request includes a reduction in detention beds and in its place they primarily rely on Alternatives to Detention (ATD) where aliens are released and supposedly monitored with technology like ankle bracelets or even smartphone apps. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a new report detailing that the lax enforcement across the immigration policy sphere extends to internal oversight of their own programs. The report details that while ATD use has more than doubled in the past few years, oversight of the released aliens and the contractors running the program has seen no such expansion.

We have a new 'Florida Man' story with which to delight. Judge T. Kent Wetherell II, who perhaps we can call Mr. T., is the latest judge to tackle the most pressing question in immigration law: does the President have virtually unlimited discretion to enforce the law based on policy preferences?

Biden Talks Limited Resources But Only for Enforcement

Per a scoop from Axios, the Biden Administration is launching an expansion of their attempt to release seemingly every illegal immigrant they encounter. This time they are expanding “Alternatives to detention (ATD)” with the aim of having most aliens released and on some “stricter” form of monitoring like a version of house arrest. But what isn’t really asked by Axios, and most media, is how resources are so limited that DHS cannot be expected to do their statutory duty, but yet has seemingly limitless resources to release, monitor, and manage hundreds of thousands of aliens released into the United States.

The ongoing border crisis, which President Biden declared as merely seasonal last spring, has persisted longer and been far worse than we have seen in decades. Given that it has lasted longer and seen far larger numbers than any of his predecessors, it cannot be fairly described as the latest iteration of a long-term problem.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas advanced the Biden Administration's efforts this week to completely dismantle interior immigration enforcement. DHS took steps to shut down two facilities that detain illegal aliens -- one in Georgia and one in Massachusetts. Along with the closing of the Massachusetts facility, DHS announced it's also cancelling its 287(g) agreement with the Bristol County sheriff's office.

In his first address before a joint session of Congress, Pres. Biden urged the few Members in attendance to approve his massive immigration reform bill that would grant amnesty to more than 11 million illegal aliens and triple the number of green cards issued over the next decade. As for the ongoing crisis at the southern border, where a record number of unaccompanied alien children have been apprehended crossing the border illegally, Biden took no responsibility and instead blamed the surge on conditions in Central America and Donald Trump.

In picking Sen. Kamala Harris of California to complete his ticket, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has made two groups very happy -- Wall St. and Silicon Valley. If her voting record on immigration is any indication, Sen. Harris will aggressively advocate for the Biden-Sanders 'Unity Plan' -- a list of policy recommendations that would increase legal immigration while all but eliminating immigration enforcement. That's good news for Big Business and bad news for American workers and their wages.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
