Virginia Legislature Passes E-Verify Bill

author Published by Chris Chmielenski

The Virginia state legislature has passed a bill that requires state agencies to enroll in the E-Verify Program and use the system for all new hires. The bill passed the State Senate with amendments on Wednesday, which were approved by the General Assembly earlier today.

The bill now goes to Gov. Bob McDonnell for his signature.

The bill as passed by the House would have required local municipalities to also enroll in and use E-Verify, but the Senate struck it from the bill. The Senate also changed the effective date from December 1, 2010 to December 1, 2012.

Once signed into law, Virginia will become the 11th state in the nation to have a mandatory E-Verify law on the books. View a map of states with mandatory E-Verify laws in place.
