Utah Republicans Pass Resolution to Repeal State Guest-Worker Program

author Published by Chris Chmielenski

Delegates attending the Utah Republican State Convention approved a resolution supporting the repeal of Utah’s recently passed bill that increases state immigration enforcement efforts, but also creates a guest worker program for illegal aliens already living in the state. The delegates passed the resolution 833-to-739.

The Republican party in Utah is deeply divided over the issue.

State Senator Curt Bramble, who offered the legislation earlier this year, and Attorney General Mark Shurtleff spoke out against the resolution.

HB116 was passed and signed into law by Gov. Gary Herbert in March. The law seeks a federal waiver so the state can offer temporary worker visas to illegal aliens. The law imposes fines on illegal aliens during the visa application processand requires background checks for all applicants.
