USBP to Pass 1M Alien Apprehensions Just Halfway Through FY22

According to the head of the U.S. Border Patrol, more than 1 million aliens have been apprehended after illegally crossing the southern border just halfway into fiscal year 2022. “It is a strong likelihood that we would have apprehended over 1 million individuals,” Chief Raul Ortiz told reporters in a briefing in San Antonio days before the six-month benchmark, reports the Washington Examiner.

Border Patrol has apprehended 993,000 aliens illegally crossing the border since October 2021, said Ortiz. This means that the U.S. is on pace to hit well over 2 million alien apprehensions during this fiscal year, especially when considering Biden’s decision to end the CDC’s pandemic border order, Title 42.

Over 24 hours earlier last week, USCBP encountered more than 9,000 aliens – this is dramatically higher than Obama’s Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson’s definition for a border crisis – which was over 1,000 alien encounters per day. Yet, the Biden Admin. has decided to open the floodgates on the border by ending Title 42; without this order, Border Patrol has reportedly been told to expect up to 18,000 alien apprehensions per day.

As reported by Axios, the Administration has even acknowledged the threat of an even larger border surge – stating that “A major consideration for the Biden administration is that ending the order could prompt a ‘mass migration event.'” BP Chief Raul Ortiz said that migrant encampments just across the border in Mexico were already growing in anticipation of the Administration’s decision.

To add to this, recent reporting states that 62,000 illegal aliens evaded Border Patrol in March. This averages approximately 2,000 known alien ‘gotaways” per day say multiple Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources.

Per those same sources there have been more than 300,000 known “gotaways” – migrants who were not apprehended or turned themselves in and who got past agents – since fiscal year 2022 began on October 1st,” reports Fox News. For context, according to former Border Patrol Cheif Rodney Scott, there were approximately 400,000 known ‘gotaways’ throughout all of FY 2021.

A known ‘gotaway’ is any migrant observed by Border Patrol illegally crossing the border, who later evades capture. Border Patrol uses various tools to tally this number, including cameras, sensors, and other tracking devices and tactics. As a result, officers often state that the actual number of ‘gotaways’ is usually much higher than what is reported – as the registered number only accounts for the aliens the officers witnessed.
