This week Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) introduced the ICE Agent Support Act of 2016 (S.2538) which would give the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) the resources necessary to help the agency enforce immigration laws. The bill would allow the agency to collect fines from illegal aliens for refusing to leave the U.S. after being order to do so, using false documents, or engaging in marriage fraud.
This bill is in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Sarah Saldaña’s testimony last year when she said that the enforcement polices are “not practical” because of the lack of funding and resources available to the agency.
The funds received from the fines would be used by ICE to track, identify and detain criminal aliens, and purchase vehicle and weapons necessary for the agents to do their job.
“For far too long, the Obama administration has discouraged enforcement of our nation’s immigration laws,” Cruz said in a statement. “This legislation sends a clear signal of support to the ICE agents who risk their lives on a daily basis to enforce our nation’s immigration laws. The next administration must support the people who protect us from illegal immigration and punish those who break our laws.”
