Rhode Island House Passes E-Verify

The Rhode Island House or Representatives passed a mandatory E-Verify bill on Tuesday, but the measure now goes to the state Senate where it’s failed the last two years. The bill would require private employers to use E-Verify, which expands an executive order, which requires government contractors to use the workplace verification tool.

The bill passed by a 38-33 vote after two hours of floor debate. Supporters of the bill pushed how E-Verify would help the state’s ailing businesses and the success of the program.

In each of the last two years, a similar bill has passed in the House, but failed to make it out of committee in the Senate.
