Rep. Steve King Speaks Out Against GOP DREAM Act Alternatives

author Published by Chris Chmielenski

With the recent introduction of Rep. David Rivera’s STARS Act that would provide amnesty to some illegal aliens brought to the U.S. at a young age and reports of a bill being drafted in the Senate by Sen. Marco Rubio, the vice chairman for the House Immigration Subcommittee Steve King told Fox News Latino that any DREAM Act alternative would be considered an amnesty and would have a hard time getting through the House Judiciary Committee.Rep. King said Rep. Rivera’s STARS Act (Studying Towards Adjusted Residency Act) meets the definition of amnesty.”They would have a hard time getting [the bills] through the [House] Judiciary Committee,” Rep. King said.”They say things that tug at our hearts. They say [immigrants] weren’t aware they were breaking the law. But it was their parents that made the poor choices for their children. It’s not our moral obligation to make up for the poor decision to bring them illegally from their countries.”Under Rep. Rivera’s proposal, illegal aliens under the age of 19 who came to the United States under the age of 16 could apply for a five-year renewable visa if they have good moral character and are accepted to college. Upon graduation, they could apply for another five-year visa that could eventually become an adjustment to legal permanent residency and citizenship. The DREAM Act allows any illegal alien under the age of 35 who holds a GED or high school diploma and enrolls in a college or university or joins the military to adjust to permanent residency.Rep. King said its unlikely that the STARS Act would get through the House Judiciary Committee, and if House Speaker John Boehner decided to move it to the House floor, King said “it would be very uncomfortable for him.””I don’t think the votes are there to pass it,” Rep. King said. For more information, see Fox News Latino.
