Few things in politics are more destructive and dangerous than the false dichotomy-an “either/or” situation which limits solutions to a given problem to two or three exclusive, usually extreme, options. In countless newspaper articles and television news shows, the debate about what to do about the millions of foreign nationals living illegally in the United States is presented as a choice between the radical extremes of mass amnesty and mass deportation.
