42 House Republicans, led by Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), sent a letter to the Appropriation Committees in charge of funding the Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department asking them to deny federal funding to any jurisdictions that uphold sanctuary policies for illegal aliens.
The letter states that, “Sanctuary cities defy federal immigration laws by harboring untold numbers of illegal immigrants and providing safe havens for criminals, many of whom are violent offenders.”
The letter also mentions Kate Steinle, who was murdered by an illegal alien last year in San Francisco. This murder brought national attention to the dangers that sanctuary policies pose to the community and has caused many states and jurisdictions to change or prevent sanctuary policies.
Sanctuary jurisdictions prohibit local law enforcement from honoring ICE detainers on illegal aliens who have committed crimes, instead the illegal alien is released back into the community. A recent study by the Center for Immigration Studies shows that there are around 340 sanctuary jurisdictions across the U.S., which results in around 1,000 illegal criminal aliens being released every month.
