In a recent presentation by Henderson County Sheriff Rick Davis to the county commissioners, he said the 287(g) program, which has been in place for about six months, has been very successful. The program’s purpose is to identify and help deport illegal aliens that are committing crimes in the county.
According to an article published in the Times-News (Hendersonville, N.C.), 64 illegal aliens were detected from Jan. 1 to June 30. Once the 287(g) program was launched on July 1, 249 people have been identified with 209 booked and detained. Twenty-four faced deportation.
According to the article, Davis said more money will be brought in than spent in executing the program. Total expenses since September 1 were $36,919.74, but billed reimbursements totaled more than $80,000 for a net of more than $43,000.
“This program will pay for itself and then some,” Davis said.
