Illegal border crossings are at historic lows and inadmissible aliens inside the U.S. are returning home in record numbers. But President Trump acknowledged on Friday that his administration’s policies are not permanent. They could be reversed by another administration just as quickly as the Biden Administration reversed those of the first Trump Administration.

In an interview with One America News Network on Friday, October 3rd, President Trump acknowledged that a new president could “open the border in two minutes.”
Only Congress can lock in successful policies like Remain In Mexico to keep the border secure; E-Verify to encourage illegal workers to return home; and increased penalties for overstayers to stop abuses in our visa system. The Secure the Border Act of 2023 (H.R. 2) that passed the House last Congress had all of these reforms. The Senate refused to take it up. This Congress has set aside the bill number “H.R. 2” as a promise to reintroduce the legislation in this Congress.
At the moment, Washington D.C. is fighting about taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants to the point of shutting down the government. But we wouldn’t be arguing about taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal aliens at all if Washington, D.C. hadn’t allowed our immigration system to be chronically abused and violated in the first place. Instead of shutting down the government, Congress should be shutting down illegal immigration. H.R. 2 would be the best vehicle to lock in border secure, accelerate self-deportation, and crack down on visa overstays. Furthermore, a vote on H.R. 2 could be a final referendum on the Biden border crisis. Only a vote will reveal who is truly committed to securing the border forever.
