While in Costa Rica, Vice President Joe Biden said that because of current economic conditions now would not be the time to push for immigration reform that included amnesty.
“It’s difficult to tell a constituency while unemployment is rising, they’re losing their jobs and their homes, that what we should do is in fact legalize (illegal immigrants) and stop all deportation,” Biden was quoted as saying in a Reuters report.
Pres. Obama has been a supporter of comprehensive immigration reform (amnesty) and recently told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus that he would travel to Mexico to meet with Mexican Pres. Calderon to discuss immigration reform.
“We believe, the president and I, that this problem [temporary migrant protection programs] can only be solved in the context of an overall immigration reform,” Biden said.
