DAPA Amnesty Heads To The Supreme Court

Published:

Fri, Nov 20th 2015 @ 1:15 pm EST

The Obama administration formally asked the Supreme Court to review and rule on the court case that is delaying his Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) executive amnesty. The petition was filed exactly one year after Pres. Obama announced several executive actions on immigration.

The 15 GOP Hopefuls square off again tonight at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. to debate the issues currently facing the country. The immigration issue played a prominent role in the first round of debates last month, while most GOP Hopefuls prioritized American workers over illegal aliens. We'll be watching to see if the Hopefuls stick to their positions and where they stand on the Syrian Refugee crisis.

We will very soon be posting our every-four-year Presidential Hopefuls Immigration Grade Cards on the 20 candidates who are polling at 1% or higher.

And we will update their ratings and grades every week until the 2016 election is held.

Every election cycle, we get hammered by people who think we have gone too hard on their favorite candidate and too easy on a competitor. But we are transparent, providing all the statements and actions (plus citations) that we use to rate each Hopeful.

The New York Times' headline says "House Votes to Revoke Legal Protections for Millions of Immigrants." There is no down-the-middle interpretation to be found here. The headline tells the reader what they are supposed to feel before they read the story.

The New York Times editorial "Mr. Obama's Moment on Immigration," garnered 458 comments, 322 of which made the "Readers' Picks" list. Of those 322, I counted 25 that supported the editorial's pro-executive-action stance. Of the 25 comments in favor of executive action, 21 were recommended ten times or less. None of the 25 received more than 67 recommendations (and that comment stated, in part, that "The message should be clear that US values legal immigration over illegal entry. If we make laws, we should implement them.").

Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Marco Rubio, R-Fla., wrote President Obama Thursday to urge him not to “legalize undocumented immigrants…until we have properly secured our southern border and provided for effective enforcement of immigration laws.” The three Republicans were part of the “Gang of Eight” who drafted and oversaw passage of the Senate-passed comprehensive amnesty bill (S. 744) in 2013. The fourth Republican "Gang" member, Sen. Jeff Flake, Ariz., did not sign the letter.

Making illegal immigration a non-deportable offense has long been a goal of many anti-enforcement activists but their radical proposal is only now becoming apparent to much of the public. For most of President Obama's term, the claim of record deportations had the public and the media focused on what was happening in the interior of the country.

As the Obama Administration searches for options to broaden its executive amnesty, a new analysis by Sen. Jeff Sessions reveals that only two percent of removals in 2013 did not meet DHS’ criminal-oriented enforcement “priorities.” He says DHS policies leave illegal aliens virtually immune from immigration enforcement unless they commit a serious crime and invite foreign nationals to overstay a visa or enter the U.S. illegally,

On Wednesday, the president of the union that represents 7,000 immigration and customs enforcement officers, Chris Crane, sent a letter to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) telling him his blill was "De Facto Amnesty." Sen. Rubio has said that the current situation is "De Facto Amnesty" for the 11 million illegal aliens living in the United States, but Crane writes that since the bill contains almost no interior enforcement provisions, it won't change the current situation.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
