Arizona FlagIn April of 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB1070 into law, igniting a hot debate over immigration enforcement in the United States. One of the toughest immigration enforcement laws passed on the local level, the purpose of the immigration enforcement law is to:

  • Ensure “the cooperative enforcement of federal immigration laws throughout all of Arizona;”
  • “Make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local government agencies in Arizona;” and
  • “Discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.”

Change the Numbers is an interactive tool that displays the impact of high immigration on population numbers, oil usage, carbon footprint, and available green space. Users can set their own annual levels of both legal and illegal immigration, and Change the Numbers will then recalculate the impact based on the entries.

NumbersUSA's mission to investigate and educate the public on immigration's impact on U.S. population growth, the environment, labor market and local communities is not a new concept. Over the past three decades, many federal commissions have called for U.S. population stabilization to address the economic, social and environmental stresses of high immigration levels due to federally sanctioned growth policies. Here we present a brief history of advocacy for population stabilization as a result of several federal commissions over the past three decades.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Often referred to as Comprehensive Immigration Reform, pro-amnesty groups seek to offer legal permanent residence to illegal aliens. Comprehensive Immigration Reform bills were introduced in Congress in both 2006 and 2007.

In 2006, separate versions were passed in the Senate and House, but an agreement was never reached in conference committee. In 2007, a version in the Senate proposed by Senators John McCain and Ted Kennedy with support from Pres. Bush failed to reach a cloture vote. The grassroots effort from NumbersUSA members was a major reason why the amnesty failed.

The SAVE Act is the middle-ground answer to the illegal immigration issue. This not only will be the most effective solution, but it is what polls show most Americans want. When given the choice among (a) mass roundups and mass deportations, (b) mass legalizations, and (c) Attrition Through Enforcement & Self Deportation, the public chooses the middle-ground Attrition option.

The bi-partisan SAVE Act was introduced by Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) in the House and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) in the Senate. It is one of our "5 Great Immigration Reduction Bills".

To date, almost all efforts to combat sprawl have focused on “Smart Growth” strategies, which primarily seek to create denser settlement by changing land use practices. Our findings indicate this approach will have limited success in saving rural land from development because it fails to address a key reason for sprawl — population growth.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
