With the recent controversy over adding verification to the Healthcare reform bill prohibiting illegal aliens from participating in a government plan, it is a good time to question why so many from neighboring countries, and all over the world, want to come to America. The most obvious answer is that we reward lawbreakers with jobs, free emergency room healthcare, and free education

In 1996, Congress decided that it needed a way to track people who overstay their visas — a huge and understated part of the nation's illegal immigration problem. So it authorized a program to verify that visa holders who arrived in the country eventually left it.

THIS LABOR DAY: Elites Decry Horrible Worker Situation -- but only a few recognize their immigration policies making it worse

On a dismal day for America's workers, I see a few bright spots that all of us connected to NumbersUSA could make brighter through focused activism this fall. (Look inside.) But the utter hypocrisy and insanity of the elites is on full display as they lament the huge oversupply of workers for jobs after 21 months of a recession in which they have called for more immigration to meet what they claim is a U.S. "worker shortage!"

As Director of Government Relations for NumbersUSA, I am used to outrageous statements from Members of Congress. But I was truly shocked recently when I witnessed a federal judge commend an illegal-alien felon in federal court.

Grassley: New 287(g) Policies Hamper Local Law Enforcement Ability to Apprehend Illegal Aliens

In a July 14 letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano, Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said he is worried that new departmental policies will weaken the 287(g) program, which was specifically designed to give local law enforcement offices the capability to investigate, apprehend, and detain illegal immigrants by entering into a cooperative agreement with the federal government. Grassley also noted that the department’s changes are a step backward in the effort to enforce the nation’s immigrations laws.

SCHUMER TRIES TO MOVE GOAL POSTS -- But American People Demand More Than Border Security As Price For Amnesty Conversation

It is as if Sen. Schumer (D-NY) and Pres. Obama are moving the goal posts to the 40-yard line and hope to convince a gullible America that it is the real goal line. They are trying to sell the idea that amnesty bills were defeated several times in 2007 merely because our southern border wasn't "secure." Now, they are claiming that just because arrests are down on the Mexican border that it proves the border is secure and Americans are ready to talk about amnesty. Folks, not only is the 40-yard line not the goal line, but the ball hasn't come close to crossing the 50-yard line yet.

Open-borders groups say their top priority this spring is to pass the DREAM Act Amnesty for illegal-alien teenagers. I have some ways you can test a politician to see if he/she is really concerned about those teens, or if the real goal is just to flood as many foreign workers into occupations and neighborhoods as possible. Here's the test . . . .

Dr. Steven Camarota, Research Director at the Center for Immigration Studies, published an op-ed in yesterday’s Washington Post that discusses the ramifications of adding 135 million people to the U.S. population in just 42 years, something the Census Bureau’s projections say will occur unless our immigration policies change. He also stressed that the American people must decide if they want a much more densely settled country, because this outcome is not a foregone conclusion.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
