A recent Politico story reveals how the 2012 Obama re-election team plans to use immigration as a wedge issue during next year’s presidential campaign. According to the article, the team is using results from a June Gallup poll that shows that the majority of Americans support a pathway to citizenship for the nation’s 11-18 million illegal aliens. But the re-election team is ignoring a major flaw in the poll question.

Illegal aliens enter the United States in two distinct ways: approximately 60 percent cross a border illegally; and the remaining 40 percent overstay a legal visa. While the Border Patrol is responsible for preventing the first method of illegal entry, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is responsible for finding and removing visa overstays and individuals not apprehended by the border patrol.

According to a new report issued by the Pew Hispanic Center, the annual number of illegal aliens entering the United States has dropped from 850,000 at the beginning for the decade to 300,000 at the end of the decade. The drop proves that the federal government does not need to rely on mass deportations, but simply remove the magnets that lure illegal aliens to the country.

With the exception of a quick special session by both the House and Senate to approve a $600 million supplemental spending bill to be used for border security, the month of August is typically used by Members of Congress to return to their home districts and reconnect with their constituents through Town Hall meetings. This August, Democrats and Republicans are facing questions from citizens in their district on the issue of immigration.

Arizona FlagIn April of 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed SB1070 into law, igniting a hot debate over immigration enforcement in the United States. One of the toughest immigration enforcement laws passed on the local level, the purpose of the immigration enforcement law is to:

  • Ensure “the cooperative enforcement of federal immigration laws throughout all of Arizona;”
  • “Make attrition through enforcement the public policy of all state and local government agencies in Arizona;” and
  • “Discourage and deter the unlawful entry and presence of aliens and economic activity by persons unlawfully present in the United States.”

Pres. Obama delivered a 30-minute speech to approximately 250 Pro-Amnesty supporters at American University in Washington, D.C. today, calling for 'comprehensive immigration reform' with a mass amnesty. While the President addressed the need to bring 11-18 million illegal aliens "out of the shadows", he failed to address the impact of issuing that many permanent work permits on an economy that has more than 25 million U.S. citizens and legal immigrants looking for full-time work.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
