The House Democratic leadership continued its assault on immigration enforcement at a May 6 House Ways & Means Subcommittee hearing on the SAVE Act (H.R. 4088).

Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Michael R. McNulty (D-N.Y.) tipped his hand in advance, revealing his strong bias against requiring employers to use an Internet system (E-Verify) to keep illegal aliens from getting jobs. He said Congress "(s)hould not compound the problems of a flawed system. And, it is essential that we not increase the workload of the Social Security Administration." McNulty stacked the witness list with the Chamber of Commerce and others opposed to blocking their ability to hire illegal workers.

However, freshman Democrat Heath Shuler of North Carolina was allowed to testify in favor of the bill he introduced. Citing years of studies that have found that nearly every business using the E-Verify system praises its efficiency, Shuler said:

* E-Verify gives employers the tools they need to prevent penalties for hiring illegal workers.

* Every Congressional staffer has passed through E-Verify over the past decade.

* DHS is not aware of any case since 1996 where a [legal] employee has lost a job because of E-Verify.

Supporters of the SAVE Act have gained over four-fifths of the signers needed to force a vote in the U.S. house. There are currently 188 bi-partisan signers of the discharge petition.

If the petition collects 218 House signatures, the bill can bypass the committee process and be placed on the House floor for a vote, regardless of any objections by Democratic leaders. This is the time to push aside Democratic leadership's plan for rigged hearings, as well as their larger plan to grant legal work permits for millions of illegal aliens currently holding jobs and huge increases in H-2B and H-1B visas for all types of foreign workers.
