Children of immigrants hit an economic ceiling

Even the well-educated find it tough to earn middle-class wages, and some end up in the farm fields where their parents toiled to give them better lives.

Reporting from Dos Palos, Calif.
A Salvadoran flag wrapped around his neck to block out the sun, Geremias Romero hunches low to the ground alongside the other laborers, following the tractor along rows of cantaloupes.

Immigration bill splits House GOP

By Molly K. Hooper - 11/03/11 05:15 AM ET
House Republicans are split over an immigration bill that is backed by presidential candidate Mitt Romney as the measure is attracting escalating criticism from industry groups and rank-and-file members.

The rift over House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith’s (R-Texas) E-Verify bill is jeopardizing its chances of passing the Republican-controlled House.

REGION: Critics question jump in local deportation numbers
By EDWARD SIFUENTES esifuentes@nctimes.com | Posted: Sunday, October 30, 2011 7:00 pm

The number of people deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Diego County nearly doubled from fiscal 2010 to the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, according to the agency.

But it's not because more illegal immigrants are being caught here; the agency is now counting people arrested in Arizona and Texas who are then brought here and deported.

Why Science Majors Change Their Minds (It’s Just So Darn Hard)

By CHRISTOPHER DREW
LAST FALL, President Obama threw what was billed as the first White House Science Fair, a photo op in the gilt-mirrored State Dining Room. He tested a steering wheel designed by middle schoolers to detect distracted driving and peeked inside a robot that plays soccer. It was meant as an inspirational moment: children, science is fun; work harder.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
