STUDY: current Senate Stimulus bill would give 300,000 construction jobs to illegal aliens (UNLESS E-VERIFY ADDED)

Sounds crazy but that is just business as usual. While hundreds of thousands of American construction workers are unemployed, businesses across America continue to employ illegal aliens and will be allowed to use Stimulus money to hire hundreds of thousands more illegal aliens. The Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops are lobbying the Senate to ensure that businesses can use Stimulus money to hire illegal aliens. Nearly every national Hispanic advocacy group is lobbying the Senate to ensure that illegal aliens have the same access to Stimulus jobs as unemployed Hispanic American citizens. It's a crazy world. Will the Senate endorse insanity or pass an E-Verify amendment?

So far you haven't seen the stats in the mainstream media. You haven't heard national politicians talking about them. But now an extensive nationwide educational campaign on cable TV will expose Americans to two outrageous government statistics. And the 2 banned statistics are . . . .

Senators are being pounded from seemingly every direction to keep E-Verify out of their Stimulus bill next week (after the House this week put strong E-Verify requirements in their bill to make sure illegal aliens don't get jobs created by the Stimulus). The anti-E-Verify folks are relying on enough Senators believing arguments that are demonstrable lies. AND THE 2 BIGGEST LIES ARE ........

House E-Verify Victory Raises Question of Whether Illegal-Worker Supporters Willing to Fight in a Roll Call Vote

Despite frantic behind-the-scenes lobbying, the massive pro-illegal-worker coalition did not force a vote on the U.S. House floor Wednesday to strip from the Stimulus bill two strong new E-Verify provisions. But our NumbersUSA Hill Team has heard a number of indications of preparations for closed-door killing of these provisions in the Senate or in a joint congressional/White House conference committee. Our job is to force this fight into the open to find out which Senators (and President) will insist on the right of unscrupulous governments and businesses to hire illegal foreign workers.

Lobbyists Pressing U.S. House Today to Allow Stimulus Recips to Hire Illegal Aliens

When it comes to immigration, we are living in a Wild West culture in which the outlaws feel free to strut down the street and demand that the authorities give them whatever they want. Witness Capitol Hill today. The lobbyists for a variety of industries that hire lots of illegal foreign workers are rallying their troops to phone U.S. House leaders; they hope to strip a provision of the giant stimulus bill that would require recipients to use E-Verify to keep illegal aliens from getting the new jobs. Will the good "townspeople" cower behind their curtains, or get out in the streets and insist that the House "sheriffs" run the bandits off?

No Democrat in New York's large congressional delegation has shown more promise in truly bringing relief to the unemployed, especially in her approach to immigration issues. After only one term in the U.S. House, we still have a lot to learn about Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). On many immigration issues related to the welfare of American workers, she did not take a stand. But when she did take a stand, it was generally good -- earning her a respectable B Immigration-Reduction Grade from NumbersUSA.

Shirley (my wife) just got a call from her 99-year-old father (every year a Republican) who said Pres. Obama's inaugural speech made him hopeful. As for me, I was relieved that I didn't hear anything that spells trouble for us, and also hopeful because several major principles in his speech are recipes for doing the right thing on immigration -- even if Mr. Obama probably doesn't realize it.

In light of the Rev. Martin Luther King's two-decade civil rights battle celebrated today, your four-year fight for justice for Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean may seem small, but it is in the same vein. Large numbers of the people who begin a battle always fall off after awhile as the outcome becomes uncertain and duration too tiring, but those who never quit trying enjoy the sweetest satisfaction of all when victory finally comes. Thanks to all of you who have been sending faxes and making phone calls the entire four years.

Prosecutor of Jailed Border Patrol Says Sentences Too Harsh -- Time For Bush To Pardon

Even if you think Border Agents Jose Compean and Ignacio Ramos were guilty of over-zealously pursuing a convicted drug smuggler/illegal alien and shooting at him just before he crossed back into Mexico, there is no justification for them spending another month in prison (after two years already). Especially not when the man who prosecuted them says their sentences were too harsh. And especially not when you look at the other people Pres. Bush has pardoned and the terrorists that the new Attorney General backed for pardons under Pres. Clinton.

NumbersUSA's members have been divided about the appropriateness of the actions of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who have now been in prison for two years. But I believe that almost nobody believes they should spend another day in prison. In the name of fairness, proportionality and morale for our beleaguered defenders on the borders, Pres. Bush needs to release these border agents to their families. Please contact the White House today before Pres. Bush leaves.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
