Pressure Forces Ga. County To Comply With Law, Check Eligibility for Public Benefits
In the wake of pressure from immigration reduction activist D.A. King and NumbersUSA members, Cobb County, Georgia will begin checking the immigration status of every applicant for a business license. As of July 1, 2007, Georgia law required all local governments to use certain federal tools to determine the eligibility of applicants for "public benefits" such as business licenses. However, Cobb County is the first local government in the state to commit to do so, the Marietta Daily Journal reports

Oregon Sees Fall in License Seekers After Requiring Proof of Legal Residence
The State of Oregon has seen a fall in the number of individuals seeking driver's licenses after implementing rules that require license seekers to show a valid Social Security number, proof of identity, and proof of Oregon residency.
The State has also seen a sharp decrease in the number of Spanish-language tests taken and a increase in the number seekers being turned away due to a lack of documentation.

Va. Jails Now Check Immigration Status of Foreign Inmates
A Virginia law took effect this month which requires local jails to contact ICE to check the immigration status of all foreign-born inmates, irrespective of whether they are in the country legally. While the law hasn’t received as much attention as the 287(g)-related illegal alien crackdown in Prince William County, Va., it will benefit other jurisdictions seeking to identify and deport illegal alien inmates. The law may not have the force multiplier effect that results from Prince William’s policy, however.

58 Illegal Aliens Arrested in Ohio Enforcement Actions
Yesterday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 58 illegal aliens during eight enforcement actions in the Ohio towns of Ashland, Fremont, Norwalk, Oberlin, Oregon, Sandusky, Vermilion and Youngstown. All were employed in the Norwalk-based Casa Fiesta restaurant chain. Agents also searched a Norwalk home after a warrant was issued.The raids were the result of a one-year criminal investigation, according to an ICE press release.

More Agricultural Entities Using H-2A Guestworker Program
Stepped-up federal immigration enforcement efforts are causing farmers and growers to use the H-2A guestworker program more, the Seattle Times reports. The H-2A program allows agricultural employers to hire foreign workers if the state work force agency certifies no citizens or legal immigrants are available to do the work. Unscrupulous farmers and growers that had being using illegal alien labor now fear getting caught in the enforcement web, so they are turning to the legal alternative that had been there for them all along.

Nevada McDonald's Franchisee Fined $1 Million for Hiring Illegal Aliens
A Reno McDonald's franchisee has been fined $1 million for giving illegal aliens false Social Security numbers so they could be hired.
Mack Associates filed guilty pleas to one count of conspiracy to encourage and induce an alien's unlawful residence in the United States and one count of aiding and abetting an alien to remain in the United States. Both are felony offenses.
