In recent years, the New York Times has reliably reported the best arguments for immigration expansion and periodic legalizations, but its story this week may be the furthest the Gray Lady has gone toward presenting arguments in favor of perpetual illegal immigration.

The story, if taken seriously, has profound implications.

New York Times demonstrates chain migration and dismisses debate with a bogus bromide

The assumption that immigration policy must be either a threat to American workers or "a net positive to the country" is as false as it is ubiquitous. Not only can immigration generate a net economic surplus and leave workers worse off at the same time, but that's exactly what's happening under our current system.

The tendency in the media to primarily blame foreign companies for using H-1B visas to displace American workers is inaccurate and harmful. Big U.S. tech firms that have histories of displacing American workers received significantly more H-1B visas In fiscal year 2017 than they did the year before.

In California, the diminishing Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is just one of many concerns. The Department of the Interior projects that by mid century, the Colorado River will no longer be able to support California and the six other states that rely on it for water. "The main reason," according to the San Francisco Chronicle's story, is California's "expected population growth from 40 million to as many as 76 million people."

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
