New RNC Policy Promotes Amnesty Over Attrition Through Enforcement

At its Summer meeting last week, the Republican National Committee rejected the Attrition Through Enforcement policy established in its 2012 National Platform in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens. Since illegal aliens would be legalized but denied citizenship, the RNC’s spin suggests the new policy would cause no harm. But the work permits offered to illegal aliens cause the greatest damage. And since most voters do not support this shift in policy, the RNC has likely harmed itself.

CNS News reports that President Obama will take part in an Oct. 8 ceremony establishing a national monument honoring the late Cesar Chavez, the founder of the United Farm Workers union. What’s ironic about Obama’s gesture is that he will likely compare Chavez’ struggle for farm worker rights to the movement to bestow rights (and citizenship) on illegal aliens when Chavez was, in fact, an adamant opponent of illegal immigration.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is the latest in a line of politicians touted in the media for laying out the illegal-alien sanctuary welcome mat and making their jurisdiction more “immigrant-friendly.” Notwithstanding the fact that immigrants are, by definition, legally present and not in need of sanctuary policies, these pandering politicians will not help their struggling cities rebound by creating havens for illegal aliens, irrespective of what the media say.

A number of state and local jurisdictions enacted immigration-enforcement measures in 2012 or fended off attempts to accommodate illegal aliens. Alabama revised its enforcement law without significantly weakening it while Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and three local governments enacted enforcement laws. Colorado, Delaware, Indiana, Hawaii, Washington State and, so far, California denied illegal aliens the public benefits advocates demanded.

Constitutionally-Challenged Administration Unleashes Amnesty Fraud Machine

Perhaps I’m missing something but I can’t find a provision of the US Constitution that authorizes a president to act because he/she just can’t wait for Congress. The Obama Administration must have found the language. Otherwise, the new administrative amnesty-in-place for illegal aliens under the age of 31 would be considered an extra-constitutional directive by fiat.

On May 18th Governor Robert Bentley signed HB 658, a bill that amends Alabama’s 2011 immigration enforcement law. Although marketed as a “tweak” of existing law, HB 658 as passed by the House would have seriously undermined it before courts had a chance to rule on pending lawsuits. Fortunately, NumbersUSA members were able to convince the Senate to delete many harmful provisions and persuade House members to accept the changes.

When the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments this week on the Arizona SB 1070 case, the Justices left little doubt that the Obama Administration’s central argument – Congress gave the feds sole authority over immigration – just didn’t hold water. The discussion focused rather on how the Arizona law might work in tandem with federal law, or possibly be in conflict. This is good news for those interested in expanding state and local government immigration enforcement efforts.

2011 was a great year for enacting state-level Attrition Though Enforcement legislation and 2012 may well follow suit. State legislators seem to set records each year for the number of immigration-related bills introduced – the vast majority of which are enforcement-oriented – and the enforcement laws enacted have become increasingly comprehensive. These trends may continue in 2012 because the demand for enforcement solutions remains high.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
