The conceptual framework used by environmentalists such as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. when they fight against pollution applies precisely to illegal immigration. They refuse to embrace the logical conclusion of their ideas because it is not politically correct.

If the government were really honest about paying for amnesty, they would do something like they did with the $700 billion bank bailout last October, (the TARP). The leaders of the government would come before the American voters and say, “We need $999 billion to pay for amnesty for people who entered the country illegally.”

NumbersUSA received a number of "outside" comments from people who disagreed with Roy Beck's quote in a front-page New York Times article on April 9. The following was particularly interesting. I verified that the writer owns a small insurance company in Houston, Texas. I am changing his name to Mr. Smith in order to protect his anonymity.

Paul Krugman won the Nobel Prize for economics in 2008. But on the subject of illegal immigration, he is mistaken. He compared the current situation in the United States to that of his Jewish grandfather who first came to America near the turn of the century. But escaping from massacres is far different than seeking higher wages.

President-elect Obama has requested that Congress have a fiscal stimulus package waiting on his desk for his signature when he takes office on January 20. The stimulus is projected to be up to $700 billion with the aim of creating 2.5 million jobs over 2 years. That is $280,000 per job, or $140 billion per each 500,000 jobs created.

A coalition of employers has started a group to lobby for increases in the number of low-skilled immigrants admitted into the United States. They claim to need workers for meatpacking, poultry plants, plant nurseries, landscape laborers, construction, restaurant work, and to work in hotels, presumably as maids and janitors. We believe that the website represents yet another lobby asking for a handout from the United States government.

Low unemployment numbers help the political party in power get reelected. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which reports the unemployment rate, is part of the Department of Labor. The Secretary of Labor is appointed directly by the President, is a member of the President’s cabinet, and is likely to be loyal to the President. For these reasons, it is not surprising that the figure commonly supplied by the government and reported by the media actually underreports the true situation.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
