The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement hosted a hearing on Wednesday titled “Document Fraud in Employment Authorization: How an E-Verify Requirement Can Help." The hearing featured the testimony of Jennifer Andrushko who found out two years ago that the Social Security number of her 5-year-old son has been being used for more than a decade by an illegal alien for the purposes of employment.

This past Thursday, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security hosted a hearing with Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) John Morton about the FY2012 budget. The hearing was initially scheduled for February 17th, but was moved to accommodate Director Morton who had a scheduling conflict. Among the topics of discussion were prosecutorial discretion, the 287(g) program, Secure Communities, and sanctuary cities.

The House Homeland Security Committee hosted a hearing Wednesday afternoon called “An Examination of the President's FY 2013 Budget Request for the Department of Homeland Security” with DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano. The President's budget essentially cuts all 287(g) funding despite an overwhelming bipartisan vote in the House last year to keep the program. With little chance for the budget to pass, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle didn't put too much pressure on Sec. Napolitano, missing an opportunity to ask hard questions of the Administration and its efforts to curb illegal immigration.

The House Judiciary Committee hosted a Department of Homeland Security oversight hearing last Wednesday with Secretary Janet Napolitano. Deferred Action and Fast and Furious were the primary topics of contention, and while Jason Chaffetz and Darrell Issa made their points, other good exchanges from Randy Forbes and Sandy Adams were overshadowed.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following report is from the House Immigration Subcommittee's oversight hearing on the priorities of immigration enforcement. ICE Director John Morton had to defend the Administration's policy of granting deferred action or parole to illegal aliens who hadn't committed a serious crime. Rep. Ted Poe challenged Morton for implementing a policy that encourages future illegal immigration, while Rep. Trey Gowdy challenged Morton for creating a policy instead of asking Congress for assistance.

The House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security hosted a hearing Tuesday morning titled, “Does Administrative Amnesty Harm our Efforts to Gain and Maintain Operational Control of the Border?” While Members stuck mostly to their traditional talking points, the hearing did shed some light on Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith's HALT Act, which out prohibit the Administration from offering an Administrative Amnesty. Democrats on the Subcommittee discussed the costs associated with deportations, while Republicans questioned DHS officials on the logic of allowing illegal aliens in custody go free.

EDITORS NOTE: Last week, the House Judiciary Committee completed its mark up of Chairman Smith's Legal Workforce Act, H.R.2885, which would require all businesses to use E-Verify. Ironically, the more liberal Members of the Committee tried to use conservative arguments in their attempt to delay or poison the bill. Some Members went as far as calling portions of the bill an amnesty for illegal aliens, while other Members argued that the bill for being against states rights and increasing the size and scope of the federal government.

Last week marked the end of the second quarter of the 112th Congress. While the first quarter was somewhat lethargic, the second quarter has proven to be very productive, even if some of the Freshman Members still require a remedial education. Indeed, some of these freshmen campaigned on strong “true reformer” immigration messages, yet have done nothing but make procedural/party-line votes and colorful excuses since joining the Congress.

The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and Border Security hosted a hearing Tuesday morning on the DREAM Act. While the DREAM Act is not as much of a threat in the 112th Congress as it was in the previous Congress, it is still a threat nonetheless as supporters of the bill continue to sell the bill under the pretense of providing educational opportunities for helpless children.

The House Immigration Subcommittee held a hearing on Wednesday on Chairman Smith's Legal Workforce Act (H.R.2164) that would require nationwide use of E-Verify. The hearing was an opportunity for the National Restaurant Association and National Association of Home Builders to express support of the bill. Those who testified against the bill, including the National Immigration Law Center and several Democrats on the Subcommittee, used the hearing to express their support for illegal alien workers over the interests of 22 million Americans who can't find a full-time job.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
