What a political season we're living in! Overseas, the entire Middle East is exploding into revolution. We can only hope it leads to an improvement. And now right here in the U.S., state capitals are erupting in rancorous divisions over how to deal with huge budget shortfalls. At first blush, it looks like the issue of immigration doesn't figure that high with all the budget upheavals and foreign government changes, but keep reading . . .

I've been with NumbersUSA for all of our 14 years. One of my jobs is to send regular emails summarizing the latest on our political struggle, while also asking members to donate.

I write these letters to members, and thousands of you write me back. One thing I've noticed: Giving automatic U.S. citizenship to children of illegal immigrants and tourists, the so-called "birthright citizenship," seems to mortify members more than any other issue. It just seems unjust.

All of us at NumbersUSA can easily become focused on what's wrong with America. We believe immigration numbers are way too high and that illegal immigration is ruinous to the country.

One small favor from this disastrous recession: slightly fewer reporters are mindlessly scribbling down the phrase, "jobs Americans won't do." Over four hundred NumbersUSA members wrote to me personally after my latest fundraising email. About 275 of them are unemployed. You wouldn't believe all the jobs that they used to do and would very much like to do again.
