Updated:

On Thursday, the House of Representatives approved two immigration enforcement amendments offered by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) to the Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations Act. The bill includes funding for the Justice Department, and Rep. King's amendments addressed the recent report of more than 36,000 criminal illegal aliens being released from custody and sanctuary cities.

Rep. King's first amendment would reduce Justice Department salaries by $5 million and instead direct the funds to investigate why more than 36,000 illegal aliens who had been convicted of serious crimes where released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement while they awaited deportation. The amendment passed along mostly party lines, 218-to-193. Five Democrats joined with the Republicans, including Rep. Ron Barber of Arizona, Rep. John Barrow of Georgia, Rep. Dan Lipinski of Illinois, Rep. Collin Peterson of Minnesota, and Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia. All five face tough re-election bids in the fall.

Nine Republicans voted against the amendment, including pro-amnesty supporters Mario Diaz-Balart, Peter King, David Valadao, and Jeff Denham.

Rep. King's second amendment prevented funds from the bill from being used to reimburse municipalities that provide sanctuary to illegal aliens. The amendment also passed mostly along party lines, 214-to-194. Nine Republicans opposed the amendment with Reps. Mike McIntyre and Barrow breaking from the Democrats.

Keep Up The Good Work.

These look like moves in the proper direction.

We need more leadership from patriots like Steve King.

GREAT NEWS! It's time for some comprehensive ENFORCEMENT reform. I sent Rep King, and a few others a letter asking if it was possible to make entering this country illegally a felony. That would cover all ports of entry. Then, make it a felony to be in this country illegally a felony. This would cover over stayed VISAS and every other illegal alien in this country. Make it a $2500 fine and six months in jail. This should clear out the illegal aliens and save billions on deporting the illegal aliens. Think this will work? Look what mexico is doing to one of our vets. Now we have illegal alien children crossing the border. What are the doing about this? NOTHING! It's time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these illegal aliens.

I truly want to thank Honorable Rep. Steve King for standing up for all American citizens. Whoever voted against two immigration enforcement amendments, he/she is a dishonorable politician. Impeach them who deliberately and intentionally refuse to enforce all current laws. They are guilty for having committed so many counts of aiding and abetting crimes. It is so unbelievable that they said nothing about lawless Obama's decision to release so many highly dangerous illegal aliens who are murderers, thieves, rapists, drug pushers, etc. into our neighborhoods and then, they commit a crime again and again! DHS director Jeh Johnson recently told ICE agents NOT to touch so many illegal aliens protesting about deportations at the courthouses. He means DO NOT ARREST and DEPORT THEM! I know why dishonorable Jeff Denham voted against 2 amendments for his revenge because he was a sore, bitter loser of his Military Amnesty bill.

Yes, Keep up the good work. We need more congressmen to step up and push for more enforcement. Especially, to push employers not to hire illegals and to introduce legislation that will ban birth right citizenship.

Yes its upsetting nothing actually gets done but if you don't at least try; you cant get things fixed.

NO Amnesty. NO work permits. NO nothing but deportation and please reduce legal immigration to under 100000 per year including refugees.

I agree! Make it short and sweet, something even a dumbo can comprehend! I like your style. You should run for Congress.

Assuming that this bill gets to the Senate with these amendments intact, how likely is it that Harry Reid would allow a vote?

9
Philip 5927 of AZ's picture

Albert, you asked a good question. I am afraid these amendments won't be likely to be acceptable in Democrat-led Senate. Harry Reid is a big problem because he is an enemy of the rule of law. He has been doing everything for lawless Obama that he can to block a vote on any right kind of constitutional amendments. He needs to be removed from his higher position.

Thomas 2924 of IN's picture

The Senate will pass its own bill, but it seems unlikely that Steve King's amendments, which put the welfare of the American people first, will survive the conference committee.

Van 0864 of VA's picture

The Senate will develop its own bill, which is unlikely to include these measures. Then both bills will go to conference committee. The question is whether Reid will allow the measures to survive conference committee. Pretty unlikely

Seems positive, Rahall is facing what may be his strongest competition in recent years and his leadership would allow him to vote Pro Citizen if it would help him in Nov. Although his state leans anti Amnesty for the ILLEGALS, even Rockefeller was Anti Amnesty during his last election, his one and only time. Sometimes the voters will be listen to by some politicians.

13
GlenR 1973 of WV's picture

Rahall does have the same C+ rating as a current WV U.S. House member Capito that happens to be the GOP candidate for U.S. Senator from WV. That does not sound good for the GOP in Nov., could be she is supported by the International Corporations' Special Interest Groups!

Every one of the congressmen/women that voted against these two bills need to tossed out of office. By them voting against the bills it shows their true colors. They lie to get themselves reelected and from then on they do exactly as they please until its reelection time again and repeat the process over and over. These people don't change, they count on the donations from the open border organizations. This is why we are stuck with a congress that puts me more in mind of a crime syndicate that organizations working for the people. We need a smaller government footprint and dump a lot of the useless regulations.

America Less Democratic Than Switzerland

Barbara, you point out one of the problems with our representative government, that is less than democratic. Congress seems hopelessly corrupt.

My contrast with Switzerland is to point out a country in which the citizens vote on many more proposals than we do here, such as their recent vote to limit immigration, which has been destroying their labor force and culture.

We need a similar change here for war, tax, spending, immigration, and other important matters. The voters are a lot smarter than thought. But, our voters are not as smart as the Swiss, who speak 4 or more languages: most educated people on Earth. So, we have some work to do.

You raise the corruption issue. The best solution that I can think of for right now is to keep working with NumbersUSA and encourage other people to do so. Our message is starting to get through.

America is still worth saving, and we can save it, if we work together.

I don't understand why ANY POLITICIAN, in EITHER PARTY, wouldn't want to know why 36,000 illegal immigrants that had been CONVICTED of a SERIOUS CRIME were released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation. As Americans, let's now question EVERY POLITICIAN where we live, on where they stand on this, and WHY!!! Time to make some phone calls!!!

Please everyone let Rep. Steve King know that we support him in his efforts for the American citizens. Also find out who all the nine RINOS are nd blast them for supporting foreign invaders rather than Americans.

I am pleased that a few Democrats have defied the party of political correctness and corporate interests to vote with the American people, and I am disappointed that a few Republicans have chosen to abandon common decency in order to vote with cheap-labor corporate interests.

23
Albert 3441 of PA's picture

A government that will not even enforce its own laws is the result of electing to office members of an economic and political elite who openly despise the very people they claim to represent, so much so that they are actively trying to replace them. Both of the government parties are complicit in this demographic warfare.

24
GlenR 1973 of WV's picture

You hit the nail on the head. We have a Federal government led by people that want to replace our Citizens with a population devoid of any loyalty at all to our nation much as most of our current Federal leadership; the most efficient way to achieve population replacement would be through Open or No Borders. We also have the International Corporations and others that benefit financially from the cheap labor again accomplished by Open or No Borders. These cheap labor gangs are more than willing to finance their efforts via political contributions to our politicians at all levels to assist the Federal leadership in their population replacement. It seems that United States Citizens are the only obstacle to population replacement thus we are the enemy of both the Feds and the Cheap labor gangs.

It appears that the above 3 comments are valid. I try to understand how we got to this unlawful government control. Not that I can expect to live to see the final result, but so that I might leave a message for the generations that follow so that they do not err, should true American values prevail, that they may lead in such a way to never repeat.

I recall one contentious Presidential election where as a child my folks went to vote, taking myself and my brother with them. Voting place was at the school house. The playground seemed so inviting. No, my brother and I stayed with our parents, not still, relatively quiet but as young children respectful of what was happening. Very little discussion about the election among the adults, respect for the secret ballot. We waited more than an hour, possibly 2, to get a vote cast. Lesson taught, voting was a privilege and a solemn responsibility reinforced by civics classes at school.

Dad told me when Eisenhower's administration imposed acreage allotments upon farmers that if that prevailed that the doors had been thrown wide open for government control of anything. I said that they are just trying to see that you get a fair price. Dad said it was his responsibility to make right decisions, decisions that would lead to success and not failure. Government had no right to manage everything.

Then when I was in HS along came Khrushchev, advocating that he would "bury America." A very strong indication that he had no belief in democracy ever becoming a lasting type of government. Today I wonder often if he was right, if so how and/or why that would be.

Have we failed at teaching responsibility?

Have we the humility to teach that the big government we built is too big because we allowed government to manage our lives?

For Immigrationreform.com (FAIR), Julie Axelrod wrote, " "Fix our broken immigration system" is simply another code word for amnesty. Absolutely, our immigration system is not working, but our experience in 1986 shows us clearly that amnesty does not fix it."

She has a good point. There is really nothing wrong with the enforcement of our law. It is already broken. It is NOT supposed to be "cobweb"! Must fix it, not immigration system, right away! It would certainly strengthen our national security again. Enforce it now! I blame a bunch of "refuse to do anything against illegal aliens" when it comes to enforcement law. Our last 5 Presidents completely refused to enforce our immigration laws. Jimmy Carter first started it. We don't have a Constitutional abiding government any more because so many corrupt politicians have been out of control for many years. Although they know that Obama has been doing everything that he can to damage our border security and welcomes more and more new illegal aliens, they voted against Rep. Steve King's enforcement amendments. Following laws is seemingly not something they believe in. We have lawless Obama running loose for 6 years! Obama's policy that stands to illegal aliens is lawless. It rewards lawless behavior. Once lawless Obama and so many corrupt politicians are removed, that will really strength our national security again.

Another bad news for our country! Obama's recently new policy -- "When possible, agents are to seek cover or move back out of immediate area of danger." What?!? Obama leaves our border patrol agents no choice! He orders them to just run for cover and do nothing else when illegal aliens are aggressively throwing rocks at them. He makes it much more easy for highly dangerous foreign criminals like murderers, thieves and rapists, etc., terrorists, drug smugglers to enter our country without being stopped. Obama forces our border patrol agents to leave these illegal aliens alone! So-called non-criminal illegal aliens are still presently or former drug smugglers. NO Amnesty for so-called non-criminal illegal aliens who are either still presently or former drug smugglers. Eric Cantor, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, Joe Garcia and some others know it, but they refused to admit that Rep. Steve King is right. They were angry, disgruntled and afraid that Rep. King's truth could spoil their amnesty bills.

You don't have to round up and deport the illegals - stop giving them free education, stop giving them free medical care, stop allowing them to have jobs , etc, etc, AND the Mommas will take the kids home. (It worked in the '30s in California)

(Interesting - Legal immigrants have to pay out-of-state tuition in many states - illegal immigrants don't have to)

It is very important to keep these new laws in effect. We need to make sure the Senate passes them.

More Republicans pushing for Amnesty this Summer?
Is it possible they do not know how upset a majority of Americans and Legal immigrants are with the constant push for another Amnesty? And also the 36,000 criminal illegals that were to be deported released in US communities?
Republicans used to stand with the people against Amnesty and protect our sovereignty.
Do they not realize that if they join the Democrats for another Amnesty this Summer they will remain the Minority party? Maybe the Republicans have decided they want Hillary Clinton for President in 2016.
Why else would they be joining the Democrats?
