Bipartisan Group of Senators Urge Trump Admin Not to Increase H-2B Visas

Led by Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a bipartisan group of Senators sent a letter to DHS Secretary John Kelly and Labor Secretary Alex Acosta urging them not to increase the number of H-2B visas in 2017 despite authorization by Congress in the recently passed omnibus spending bill. Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), David Perdue (R-Ga.), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) also signed the letter.

Pew: More Foreign OPT Students Remaining in the U.S. to Work

A recent report by the Pew Research Center shows that more foreign students are using the Optional Practical Training (OPT) visa program to gain employment and stay in the U.S. until they can receive an H-1B visa. This prevents many American graduates, who attended the same colleges and universities, from being hired in those fields.

Today’s House Judiciary Committee markup of the Davis-Oliver Act (legislation aimed at strengthening interior immigration enforcement) has the pro-amnesty folks in a tizzy. They’re attempting to discredit the bill, but instead, they’re simply making and spreading false claims.

Rep. Labrador Introduces Davis-Oliver Act

House Judiciary Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee Vice-Chairman Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho) introduced the Michael Davis, Jr. and Danny Oliver in Honor of State and Local Law Enforcement Act (H.R. 2431) yesterday that would strengthen interior enforcement. The bill would protect and encourage jurisdictions to cooperate with ICE detainer requests and would target sanctuary jurisdictions by withholding federal grants. The House Judiciary Committee has scheduled a markup of the bill on Thursday.

ICE Releases Updated List of Recalcitrant Countries

ICE has completed its mid-year assessment of foreign countries that cooperate with ICE in accepting back their foreign nationals that have been ordered deported from the United States. Countries that refuse to accept, or that delay the acceptance of, their nationals are considered to be uncooperative or recalcitrant.

Anne Arundel County, Maryland to Join 287(g) Program

A Maryland County is close to finalizing a 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that will allow corrections officers to use federal databases to screen new inmates for immigration violations, warrants and prior crimes. Anne Arundel County also wants to house illegal aliens for ICE at its correctional center.

NumbersUSA Education & Research Foundation provides a civil forum for Americans of all political and ethnic backgrounds to focus on a single issue, the numerical level of U.S. immigration. We educate opinion leaders, policymakers and the public on immigration legislation, policies and their consequences. We favor reductions in immigration numbers toward traditional levels that would allow present and future generations of Americans to enjoy a stabilizing U.S. population and a high degree of individual liberty, mobility, environmental quality, worker fairness and fiscal responsibility.

Those who need to refer to NumbersUSA with a short, descriptive modifier should call it an “immigration-reduction organization.”
