Updated:

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, today told the House Republican caucus there is no “secret conspiracy” to force consideration of amnesty legislation, The Hill reports. He also sought to explain his mocking of House Republican concerns over amnesty.

Boehner, who addressed Republicans after they returned from a two-week recess, had sent mixed signals on immigration during their absence. And the House Republican conference chair, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, had said bills could come to the floor by the August recess.

According to those who attended the meeting, Boehner reiterated his promise that the House would not negotiate on the Senate-passed comprehensive amnesty bill. “He said there’s no secret conspiracy to have comprehensive immigration reform passed,” Rep. John Fleming, R-La., said. “He said that until this president proves that he’s willing to abide by existing law that we’re not going to pass new laws.”

Fleming said Boehner did not rule out on immigration, however. He said the House may work on legislation to force the president to implement immigration laws as Congress intended.

Boehner also reportedly sought to explain comments widely viewed as mocking his own members for their lack of interest in pursuing immigration legislation. He said he was teasing and blamed President Obama for inaction. Boehner said his caucus and their constituents did not trust the president. According to Rep. Steve Southerland, R-Fla., “He was crystal clear. President Obama is the reason we don’t have immigration [reform.]”

“There was no mocking,” Boehner told reporters at a press conference after the meeting. “You all know me. You tease the ones you love, alright? But some people misunderstood what I had to say, and I wanted to make sure members understood that the biggest impediment we have to moving immigration reform is that the American people don’t trust the president to enforce or implement the law that we may or may not pass.”

When a reporter asked if the House will vote on an immigration bill by August, Boehner was non-committal. “We know we have a broken immigration system. We’re going to work with our members, have discussions and see if there’s a way forward. But, the president needs to take action himself. He’s got to show the American people and show the Congress he can be trusted to implement the law the way it may be passed.”

The Daily Beast reports that expectations for action are low among Democrats. One senior Democratic staffer with direct knowledge of House negotiations said that Republicans have not finished drafting legislative language for their legalization bill. The staffer said Democratic lawmakers increasingly assume that Obama, not Boehner, will act first. “I think for once the president might show some leadership,” the staffer said. “We’ll see.”

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

We need NATIONWIDE MANDATORY e-VERIFY.

That's all we need for at least this year. Everything else is small stuff.

I called my senators and the speaker today. Senators' staffers were very polite ... and busy.

I could not get through to Boehner's staff; the switchboard was swamped with calls, probably some of them from members of NumbersUSA, like me !

2
Sylvia 4936 of CA's picture

Or La Raza members could be calling as well! They work hard for amnesty. We need to work even harder to stop
Amnesty!

3
Steven 9122 of OK's picture

Indeed we do. Fax/email/calls and more importantly show up at meetings and get meetings at their offices. Nothing like a face in their office so you can look into their eyes and see what's there eh?

Gene 5798 of TX's picture

Speaker Boehner, it is this simple! Lie to me once, you become suspicious, lie twice you should never be believed,NEVER!! Mr, Speaker, are you honest enough with yourself to comprehend which classification you portray as yours?

5
GlenR 1973 of TX's picture

"When a reporter asked if the House will vote on an immigration bill by August, Boehner was non-committal." How is being non-committal better for the GOP much less the Citizens? How would he know if the Immigration System is broken, the Immigration laws are ignored and our National borders are not secured. Enforce the laws and secure our borders. Felony jail time and a large fine for your buddy Grimms and all of the other ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS that furnish political contributions!

Albert 3441 of PA's picture

The American experience reveals a relatively high level of public tolerance for buffoonery (e.g., "reality TV" or a Joe Biden sound-bite on the 6 o'clock news), but the Speaker needs to understand that we are quite aware of his treason-for-profit scheme and we will not tolerate that.

Terri 9170 of IL's picture

What does it mean the president might act first for a change? If that's executive amnesty, the Dems can kiss their offices goodbye

8
Van 0864 of VA's picture

Yes, the executive amnesty options DHS Sec. Jeh Johnson is developing

Oliver 0479 of AZ's picture

I'm sending many people to the NumbersUsa website every day.
On the front page around the "spotlight" area there should
be a direct action like "fax Boehner" or "sign the no amnesty
petition" so people would be transferred to the action board,
and start to understand how much they can do.

Without that many of them think it's just a "news paper" style website with only information.,

10
Van 0864 of VA's picture

Thanks for sending people our way. I'll forward your suggestion to the tech guys

11
Thomas 3745 of FL's picture

It's time that the speaker mans up and is true to the office he holds.
The People know that when you lie it is on your record for ever.
Sorry but that is your record.

12
Albert 3441 of PA's picture

Some of these guys have little to show for 2-3 decades in the House but a mountain of lies and broken promises, but as long as they keep the pork-barrel projects coming in to their districts, people will keep re-electing them.

13
GlenR 1973 of TX's picture

Once again these politicians respond as if they are children always attempting to push the limits as far as possible until they hear stop from the citizens then pretending to stop while claiming they are doing nothing wrong. All along you know when they don't see the citizens watching they are off again doing harm to the nation for their own personal gain.

14
Aaron 8129 of ID's picture

It's like watching a group of children playing on a playground! You have the bullies and rest just trying to survive and obey the law! Pretty pathetic!

15
Dave 362 of WI's picture

So systematically dismantling our enforcement machinery using executive orders, etc., is what a Democratic staffer calls "leadership?"  Barack Obama couldn't lead a one-man parade.

16
Philip 5927 of AZ's picture

No secret conspiracy? I should not be surprised about it because he is an OPEN pro amnesty politician. That is why he still won't do anything against Obama and lawless Obama administration.

Jed Bush said it‘s an “Act of Love” the illegal aliens are here. How about it’s an “Act of Defiance” they are here? Illegal aliens are here raping the American taxpayers because of their anchor babies, taking our jobs, overcrowding our schools, overwhelming our hospitals, jails and everything else. They want to give these people amnesty? It will change NOTHING and cost BILLIONS upon BILLIONS to give the illegal aliens amnesty. Are they IDIOTS? Let’s get some comprehensive ENFORCEMENT reform. Start with making it a felony to enter this country and mandatory E-Verify.

Illegal immigration is a cancer that has to be eradicated and not tolerated.

Our country has been far too lenient of people who've not only come here Illegally, but are demanding rights as if they were citizens. We need to start enforcing the immigration laws that just seem to be collecting dust in this administration and start deporting and find ways of monitoring our porous Southern border, and all points of entry. I just hope that Americans will finally wake up to what Illegal immigration can do to not only the sovereignty of our country, but also our economic and social stability.

All of Washington elite want Cheap Slave Labor - they will continue until the borders are open and our sovereignty is gone.

20
Mike 1111 of CO's picture

Even if Politicians Want Cheap Labor,

They already have 11 million Illegals who are VERY cheap labor; how many more do they think they need ?

Amnesty would not solve the problem, and it would probably make it worse, as the Illegals would no longer be quite so cheap. Plus, they'd get even more Illegals trying to sneak in.

Amnesty is really stupid; just don't do it !!!

NATIONWIDE MANDATORY e-VERIFY is all we need this year. This will remove the 'magnet' of money that draws Illegals. They will stop coming here, start going home, and the problem will shrink. Whenever/wherever we have done this, unemployment drops and Illegals leave. Next, speed up the deportations of the ones we've already captured committing other crimes, making the size of the problem smaller. Then, we can deal with the rest as we catch them later: border security, cut immigration in 1/2 for 10 years, and start visa exit/entry checking.

Once in place, these policies will grow jobs, reduce unemployment, and spread prosperity. NATIONWIDE MANDATORY e-VERIFY will get the job started; let's do it NOW.

The speaker does not have a secret conspiracy: he says he is for massive immigration increases and for an amnesty this year- that does not deliver to many short run votes to the Democrats.

He can not be truthful to the the Chamber of Commerce and the anti worker forces and be also truthfully saying don't worry to the pro worker, pro environment immigration control people.

23
Roger 8615 of CA's picture

Our immigration system is not broken, it has never been enforced. We have a President who acts like a dictator.

24
Aaron 8129 of ID's picture

Does anyone know if the illegals are gonna be posting again tomorrow on May 1st? Odds are if they do, they'll get even more unemployed American Citizens(like myself and many others here) and their taxpaying families even more angrier ! Also they'll get more hard working Americans pissed off even more by doing this!!

25
Van 0864 of VA's picture

You'll see pro-illegal alien protests tomorrow just like on every May Day but the major advocacy groups won't be behind them. Probably don't want Republicans to see them linked to an international day of Communism

26
Albert 3441 of PA's picture

Even so, these demonstrations show that when it comes to supporting open borders for the US, the Robber Barons and the Marxists are on the same page (albeit for different reasons).

27
Robert 1440 of CA's picture

My comments haven't been appearing.

Schumer says that amnesty is a done deal, and he's already been given assurances that the GOP is going to come through for him.

Did anybody see that?

28
Marvin 5102 of MO's picture

Yes you came through loud, and clear.
I've been a life long,68 years, republican, but if they allow this Amnesty to go through.I'll never vote republican again,or if I do,I'll only vote to remove the incumbent from office.

We as Americans are trying to force our U.S. Government to obey its own illegal immigration laws. I thought they weren't above the law. Could Obama legalize as many as he wanted to without the support of Congress or the House, or does the U.S. Supreme Court not permit that.

32
Caroline 7445 of CO's picture

As usual, the comments are overwhelmingly against legalization and for deportation.

33
Aaron 8129 of ID's picture

It's too bad our country's leaders don't read these comments on these articles and this website! Maybe they'd learn that American citizens don't want any sort of amnesty for illegal aliens!

34
John 4110 of MI's picture

Jeb Bush and some other probable 2016 candidates have staked out massive immigration increase and massive amnesty positions.

We need some other wise moderate candidates to take up the enforcement and reduction positions. This issue might be moot before 2016. We need candidates to tell members of Congress that comprehensive amnesty is not something that all leaders support. Santorum has some positives on immigration and is trying to position himself as a moderate.

35
William 6898 of AZ's picture

I don't believe Boehner can be trusted. He's like McCain, flip-flopping all over the place. He's also wrong about the immigration-system being broken. The laws are purposely not being enforced to give it the "appearance" of being broken. Sorry Johnny, we aren't ALL uninformed idiots!

36
Gene 5798 of TX's picture

Flip-flop, flip-flop, must provide some political pay-off. So many over the past have used it, been called on it, still there. Might it be that we Americans are guilty of believing what we want to believe? He was on my side last week, he will return.

If he.she flip-flopped, they lied once or more! They have broken my faith and will not receive my vote, because when the chips are on the table, I cannot be sure which side they will vote!

37
Albert 3441 of PA's picture

“He said there’s no secret conspiracy to have comprehensive immigration reform passed.”

Who was suggesting that Boehner's support for amnesty is a secret? When the party leadership publicly and repeatedly endorses amnesty, it isn't a conspiracy; it's in-your-face treason.

Almost all countries seek to limit and otherwise control immigration. Long debates and much political capital is utilized in these debates. The environment, tax payer cost, damage to workers and benefits to employers are discussed. After these admittedly flawed discussions in which the cost of excessive immigration are weighed, how can an advocate of the law violators casually state that immigration crime is victimless. Do they really mean that often we can not say which specific individuals are damaged?

Another line of defense that the Obama administration is coming close to adopting is that Congress is at fault for making laws that the illegals do not like or subsequently not setting aside the laws for violators.

VICTIMLESS? We just discussed the victimless invasion of the United States a few days ago by the ILLEGALS that are just attempting to "better themselves". Not to mention the loss of jobs, the destruction of our wages, the cost of welfare, health care, and education to U.S. Taxpayers what about the HUMAN cost to our CITIZENS. Again, "While we are concerned for the safety of our families the Elitist do not care about. Drugs furnished by the ILLEGALS, Drug Wars by the ILLEGALS, United States Citizens murdered by the ILLEGALS but not to worry the Elitist will continue to furnish Cheap ILLEGAL/Amnestied Labor for the Elitist Political Contributors and Special Interest Groups of course they feel safe in their Gated Communities. If you venture out and you are murdered by an ILLEGAL Drunk Driver or you are a Police Officer murdered by an ILLEGAL during the commission of a crime or a traffic stop or a United States Citizen is in the "wrong" place (any Sanctuary City or State) and caught in the cross fire just remember Our Elitist Politicians and their Elitist Political Contributors consider those murdered as a SMALL SACRIFICE for THEIR CHEAP ILLEGAL/Amnestied LABOR or potential votes."

President Obama's position on immigration enforcement is the same as that of his predecessor: "I will enforce the immigration laws when congress gives me the laws that I want". The fact that congress tolerates this anti-constitutional behavior is yet another indicator of how poorly this country is now governed.

43
Beverly 7317 of TX's picture

Senator Boehner, you do not mock your own party even if you call it teasing. Illegal immigrants in this country are bad news. they are breaking this country with al the entitlements they receive. Plus free education for their children. The list goes on and I do NOT BELIEVE for a moment that you were teasing.
