New Orleans altered its sanctuary city policy last week in response to increasing crime rates and to further comply with federal law. Under the new policy police can honor ICE detainer requests but are still prohibited from asking or checking a person’s immigration status.

The new policy was announced during a congressional hearing by the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security. During the hearing Louisiana Attorney General, Jeff Landry, said sanctuary city policies, "allow illegals to commit crimes, then roam free in our communities."

Landry pointed out that other sanctuary cities are seeing crime rates increase, specifically Los Angeles, and that these policies, "encourage further illegal immigration and promote an underground economy that sabotages the tax base."

The Department of Justice’s own inspector general released a report a few months ago that said that sanctuary policies violate federal law. The DOJ received pressure from Congress and has begun pulling federal funding for cities with sanctuary policies.

While New Orleans’ new policy does solve the ICE detainer compliance problem, Michael E. Horowitz, the inspector general for the DOJ, says that he is not sure if these changes go far enough to comply with federal law in order to receive federal funding.

A very positive step for New Orleans, hopefully other wayward jurisdictions will follow suit. I still can't understand why asking or checking a persons immigration status should be an issue in the first place though. Who do we thank for that insanity, the (UN)ACLU? As the IG for the DO(IN)J stated, "sanctuary policies violate federal law", so why don't the daft duo (Barack & Loretta) grasp reality and their required commitment to their oath of office?

Unfortunately, there are persons in our government who would not be sorry to see the rule of law disappear. Just as law protects our citizens from the depredations of outlaws, it also protects them from authoritarian rule. That is why the collapse of the rule of law is generally followed by the rise of an authoritarian regime.  In his dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell noted that the totalitarian state of Oceania did not have any actual laws because committing the state to a particular set of rules would place limits on its ability to exercise absolute power over its subjects.

This is the direction in which our current “leaders” are taking us.

Any state or City that classifies themselves as a Sanctuary should be immediately suspended from receiving any type of federal aid or funding. Police must be empowered to inquire of one's immigration status, and those found to be illegal need to be deported immediately.

My ancestors came to this country legally. They were screened for medical issues. They had to learn English, they needed to have some education as to American history, they were not granted any government assistance at all. They worked, and they worked hard.

I believe not only ALL aid to the city but ALL aid of any kind. Additionally they should remove ALL police in any sanctuary city. Then keep them removed until ALL political people left from the mayor down is removed. It would be nice if ALL government officials of any and all kinds are arrested for failing to follow THEIR Oath of Office and/or the Constitution of the United States.

" "During the hearing Louisiana Attorney General, Jeff Landry, said sanctuary city policies, "allow illegals to commit crimes, then roam free in our communities."
And so the best way to address this problem is to prevent the police from checking to determine if someone is in our country illegally?
Hey kids, New Orleans is STILL a sanctuary city.

Sadly, this sanctuary city still survives! It must vanish without a trace at once.

New Orleans changing its sanctuary city policy is NOT enough. I don't accept it. It is a poor solution to the severe problem because this sanctuary city continues to exist. These officials let those so-called good illegal aliens, who are not being much worried about deportations, roam freely and stay there.

I want every sanctuary cities to be closed permanently. American legal and police system must appear willing to enforce federal immigration law.
