The Rio Grande border sector has led the other eight sectors in border apprehensions during the ongoing crisis, but that distinction appears to be shifting to the Del Rio border sector according to recent apprehension numbers. The Del Rio sector, which lies east of the Big Bend National Park to Laredo, Texas, saw 4,000 apprehensions of illegal border crossers over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.
The sector saw another 1,000 apprehensions on Tuesday and has so far outpaced the Rio Grande sector in January. Approximately 16,000 illegal border crossers have been apprehended in Del Rio this month compared to 13,000 in the Rio Grande.
In recent weeks, groups as large as 400 illegal aliens were apprehended crossing illegally into the Del Rio sector overwhelming Border Patrol agents.
