Border-eye view points finger at who really is killing & degrading illegals crossing desert

ARIZONA/MEXICO BORDER -- "We're seeing a lot more babies crossing through here now," Barbara Barnett told me as we sat on her patio looking out over her and her husband Roger's geologically dramatic, sprawling desert cattle ranch.

One thing that feels much clearer from this vantage point is that the increasingly risky and irresponsible behavior of illegal-alien crossers is being spurred by the politicians back in Washington who continue to undercut immigration enforcement and who promise huge rewards for those who violate immigration laws.

Rep. Price Encourages Crazy Risks By Illegals

On the eve of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee deciding whether to gut the funding of local and other effective immigration enforcement tools, I wonder if Chairman Price (D-N.C.) fully understands how his decisions affect the willingness of foreign nationals to put themselves and their families through horrific ordeals for the chance to make and spend more money.

Rep. Price is a leader in deciding funding for immigration enforcement. Yet in a news report today, he made it clear that he doesn't really believe in enforcement -- that what he really wants is to reward people who illegally enter the country with permanent residence, permanent U.S. jobs and, eventually, U.S. citizenship.

Well, I stand here in gullies near the Mexican border amidst the cast-off items of the illegal crossers getting glimpses of the people who are encouraged by Price -- and by Presidential candidates Obama and McCain -- that they will work hard to see that illegal crossers get to keep U.S. jobs if they can just make it through the desert.

"Sometimes, we disrupt a group crossing during the night and the adults will start running and just abandon their kids," Barbara said. "It's really amazing that they will do that."

Desperate Not To Miss Out On Promised Rewards

Only truly desperate people would do the things that the Barnetts see as they police their own property and watch through their increasingly sophisticated night-vision aids they have used to track the trends of illegal-alien traffic for a decade.

Once, the Barnetts say, they saw mostly young, fit men. But more and more, they also see women, children, babies, even old people and lots of fat people, many of whom have to be left behind for the Border Patrol to rescue, the Barnetts say.

The vocal champions of illegal immigration claim that the desperation is born out of terrible conditions in Mexico and beyond.

But as dysfunctional as Mexico is, the illegal aliens are not fleeing starvation or political persecution.

No, their desperation is that they fear missing out on the goodies being promised by so many of America's top politicians. And they want to get their whole families in just in case American voters come to their senses and stop re-electing so many pro-illegal-immigration leaders.

This is driven by an intense greed in the illegal crossers that causes them to take monstrous risks with their loved ones for what they believe to be excellent chances to make -- and spend -- a lot more money than they could back home.

Barbara pointed at a mountain spine running through the middle of the ranch. Behind that spine, they found a dead woman left by a group of crossers. A few days later a man called from an interior city to ask the Border Patrol if they had found his wife. Presumably he had found the job that enticed him but he had killed his wife in the process.

Both of them bore responsibility for an incredibly immoral decision they made to risk their lives just to be able to perhaps spend more money at Wal-Mart. But I place the greatest blame on those politicians who since 1996 have refused to require verification of employees at the workplace. Dry up the jobs, and people will stop crossing the desert.

The reverse is true. Refuse to pass the SAVE Act, refuse to sign the discharge petition for the SAVE Act, hamper local efforts to deter illegal settlement, talk about the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and you politicians will entice ever more risky behavior.
