On August 31 the California State Legislature passed SB 60, a bill that would grant driver's licenses to illegal aliens. The bill currently sits on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk, awaiting his signature or veto.
The law would require the California Department of Motor Vehicles to create licenses that comply with the REAL ID Act. However, the law also requires that within 240 days the DMV must issue licenses which are not REAL ID compliant for those who cannot prove their legal residence. These "un-REAL ID" licenses would be visually different from REAL ID licenses and would not allow the bearer to board flights or enter federal buildings.
In 2003, then California Governor Grey Davis signed a bill which gave driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Soon afterward, the people of California removed Gov. Davis from office and elected Arnold Schwarzenegger, who promptly signed a bill that prevented illegal aliens from acquiring driver's licenses.
In 2005 and 2006 Gov. Schwarzenegger vetoed bills that would allow illegal aliens to obtain driver's licenses.
