Public Description:

S. 2049, the Border Security and Modernization Act, would increase border controls by authorizing over a five-year period an additional 8,750 Customs and Border Patrol Agents, immigration investigators, Department of Justice attorneys and U.S. Marshals to investigate criminal immigration matters, authorize the National Guard to assist in border patrol efforts, and authorize creation of new infrastructure such as roads, walls, and barriers to prevent illegal entry. The legislation would increase interior enforcement by authorizing state and local law enforcement to detain illegal aliens after the alien has completed his/her prison sentence, expand expedited removal, and increase penalties for immigration law violators.
