Part I. Zogby America Poll

Zogby International conducted interviews of 1,015 likely voters chosen at random in the U.S. All call were made from Zogby International headquarters in Utica, New York, from Tuesday, May 28 to Thursday, May 30, 2002. The survey has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.2%. Margins of error are higher among sub-groups. Slight weights were applied to region, party, age, race, religion, and gender to more accurately reflect the voting population.

POLL QUESTIONS

Concerning current legal immigration levels for the United States, which of the following best explains your position.

Nearly three in five Americans (58%) feel that the U.S. should admit fewer immigrants into the country each year, while half as many (30%) say that immigration levels should be kept at the current levels. Six percent feel that more immigrants should be allowed into the country each year, and another 6% are not sure.

Do you agree or disagree that foreigners residing illegally in the U.S. should be given amnesty, which is the right to remain legally in the US and eventually apply for citizenship?

Two-thirds of likely voters in the U.S. (65%) disagree that foreigners residing illegally in the US should be given amnesty. One in four (26%) agrees these foreigners should be given amnesty, allowing them to eventually apply for citizenship. Nine percent are not sure.

Do you agree or disagree that the U.S. should deploy military troops on the border as a temporary measure to help the U.S. Border Patrol curb illegal immigration?

More than two in three likely American voters (68%) agree the U.S. should deploy military troops on the border as a temporary measure to help the Border Patrol curb illegal immigration. Slightly more than one in four (28%) disagrees with this use of military deployment.

Part II. Mexico Poll

Zogby International conducted interviews of 801 adults chosen at random throughout Mexico, from Friday, May 25 to Saturday, May26, 2002. Slight weights were applied to age and education to more accurately reflect the population. The survey has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3.5%. Margins of error are higher among sub-groups.

By two to one, more Mexican respondents agree (58%) than disagree (28%) that the territory of the United States’ Southwest rightfully belongs to Mexico. One in seven (14%) is not sure.

A majority of respondents (57%) agrees that Mexicans should have the right to enter the U.S. without US permission, while one in three (35%) disagrees. Seven percent are not sure.

One-half of Mexican respondents (51%) think the U.S. is a better friend than Cuba, while one in five (20%) believes Cuba is the better friend to Mexico. Nearly one-third (30%) thinks neither the U.S. nor Cuba is the better friend to Mexico, or they are just not sure.
