A reminder about illegal immigration numbers

Obviously the illegal nature of it all makes precise figures impossible. We at NumbersUSA believe it is very important to remain within the range of official, or at least academic estimates. We are unaware of any academic estimate higher than 13 million. The official U.S. Census Bureau estimate is 8 million, but other Census data extrapolates to more like 10 million. For this reason, at NumbersUSA, we prefer to use a range when estimating the illegal alien population. We discourage using higher figures because doing so makes one susceptible to challenges of credibility and the higher numbers really don't do much to advance one's arguments.

On annual illegal immigration, the Center for Immigration Studies has extrapolated the latest Census data to show that Census data suggest that 700,000 to 800,000 new illegal aliens are settling each year. Now, far, far more than that enter illegally each year, but there is a lot of back and forth. The 700,000 to 800,000 represents illegals who truly settle in for at least a couple of years, and usually much, much longer.
