Last week, Charles Breiterman wrote a blog that included an article written by NumbersUSA member Karl Keifer. Karl is a contractor who provided a first-hand account of the building industry’s use of illegal aliens to fulfill its labor needs. The blog has received more than 60 comments from NumbersUSA members sharing stories similar to his.
Last year, we began allowing members to comment on our blogs. For a while, we received only a handful of comments, but now, we routinely receive 20 or more comments per blog. We’ve found that it’s a great tool to hear how our nation’s immigration policies and lack of effective enforcement impact real Americans on a daily basis. It’s also helped drive our Local Power project, which is now up and running.
Often, the comments to our blogs can be quite informative and provide us with some insight to our members. Karl wrote about how illegal aliens impact the way that contractors do business and how jobs for Americans can be hard to come by. Many of your comments touched upon the same two points. Here’s a sample of some of those comments, and please add more of your own stories below.
As a union carpenter who is disabled from a job site accident, I have seen firsthand all that Karl is talking about in his article. The strange thing is being from a northern city when I travel to the south and see the wages that are being paid for my trade it is without a doubt a crime. How is it people, that in states like Georgia the carpenter is being paid the amount of money that I was paid as an apprentice thirty years ago? How does one survive, let alone get ahead in this world? Well frankly they don't, the carpenter is an illegal alien just as Karl's article pointed out.

I was watching a news broadcast here in our area about the harvest and they interviewed a farmer then talked to some of the workers about the job which angered me to no end! Here I am along with several other American citizens out of work and I have to sit and watch them interviewing these illegal aliens. I could use that job they were doing and am perfectly capable of doing it. This farmer did not verify that these guys were here legally and I know for a fact that there are a bunch of American citizens who are more than willing to do those labor jobs, even for minimum wage!

Karl's story is not new to many of those in the construction business. For example, our niece's small family construction business in New York State has almost been put out-of-business by having to bid against companies who hire illegal aliens.

I've myself been a victim of job and salary reductions in the computer industry, as this idiotic country sends all the middle class jobs overseas.

I was married in my twenties to a young, skilled, talented tradesman. Illegal immigration ruined his business, his career, our marriage, and his life. This was over twenty years ago.

My husband came to work with the same company as me a few months ago. My boss has 3 crews for lawn care. Now the seasons changing and he's going to reduce his crews from 3 legal workers and 7 illegal aliens to 2 legal workers and 4 illegal aliens. My husband is the one legal he's letting go.

As an American construction worker I can attest to the fact that this is true word for word, I have seen American workers with families fired from jobs and the next day two illegal aliens hired in their place (for less money too).

I have been a C-54 (tile) contractor for over 25 years and YES Illegal aliens and the contractors who hire them have tried to destroy the industry. The quality is abhorrent. The one sign people are growing tired of it is when I am asked, "Do you do the work?” I am almost always hired on the spot when I tell them I do the work myself.

As a retiree I have had time to watch and communicate with representatives in Washington about the disastrous effect illegal immigration has on our country. The shell games and head fakes they use to game the illegal immigration issue is infuriating. To save our country from self serving politicians we need to give our full effort to expressing our outrage at their disregard for logic, financial responsibility and the long term welfare of our country. Then we need to remember to work to replace those who do not heed our call at election time.

We needed a new roof last year and could not find a contractor who used legal, realistically paid employees anywhere. But they did not take any less for the job.
They come out and bid the job using an American, but as soon as the workers arrive, not one speaks unbroken English, if they speak English at all.
I am so sick of what has happened to the American worker in this country.
Growing up I watched my dad's frustration as the Union Painter's Dist.Council was forced to hire sub standard employees. My parents were forced to move because of the crime wave that hit our area, shootings, rape, murder, carjackings. In the early 70's we neighborhood kids would play hide & seek until 10:00 pm, by 1985 you couldn't leave the house alone after dark for fear of becoming a victim of crime.
If groups like NumbersUSA would have been around 25 years ago we might have never got into this position in the first place. But I am still grateful for NumbersUSA, and I thank all of you for doing this work....better late than never.......I hope anyway!

In northern Westchester my father tried to rent the house I grew up in. He has been advertising since the beginning of August. It is a two bedroom house renting for $1500 a month. Decent neighborhood. The house has been viewed 12 times. All the potential renters were illegal aliens. They couldn't come up with the first month rent and security along with a heating contract. $3000 is all that stands between them filling up the house with too many people. My father can't refuse them if they come up with the money because that would be discrimination. I think we've been displaced by illegal aliens. The invaders are winning by the sheer force of their numbers.

As someone from a diverse background with a White Puritan descended father Black Caribbean mother I like seeing that despite the allegation of NumbersUSA being exclusively White, racist and anti immigrant this thread without any pre planning has posts from Mayflower descendants but also more recently arrived ethnic Whites, Blacks, Indians and Latinos. We have members who are legal immigrants born in dozens of countries. There is also a post from a Native American on another thread.

Illegal aliens have driven Americans out of the construction business. My brother was working as a welder on the construction of a school building. The welders were angry about all the illegals so ICE was called. Americans were being paid $125 a day and the illegal $100.00 a day. The welders felt if they did not put a stop to the illegals it would get to the point they would no longer be able to find jobs.
Mu brother had started out as a cement finisher but had to learn a new trade because if you were not illegal and if you did not speak spanish you would not be hired.

I made a good living until the last few years and now I dont have any work. I am 2 months behind on our mortgage and car payments, THANKs to the illegal labor and contractors who use them. I have never hired an illegal. American workers are going to have to work together to stop this mess that our government has gotten us into. People need to stand up and not allow illegals on their jobs and make it a known fact that they wont tolerate it. As long as people ae allowing illegsl to ct their grass and put roofs on their houses and etc. the problem will never be solved. It is time the illegals were sent back home and all the people who are hiring them spent a little time behind bars for breaking the law. Our problems would be solved

I was a General Contractor for over 14 years in Texas and because of my health I was forced to retire a couple of years ago. It didn't come too soon as it had become very plain even then that the illegal aliens were destroying the industry. They come over here illegally and as many as 3 to 4 families of illegals will rent a 2 bedroom house and all the men go out and bid construction jobs at a rate I could not compete with because I bought the insurance, the bonds, and the permits to legally do a job and they dod none of this. Thus they could bid the job much lower than I could so they got the job. It was almost always the same outcome for the owners, they paid a percentage down in cash, they got substandard work with no recourse to get the bad work corrected or their money back. The illegals took their money and did substandard work, if they did the work at all, and refused to correct anything until they were paid the remainder of the cost of the job and when they received the remainder of the money they never showed up to correct what was wrong or not done. Sure, they could be prosecuted if they could be found but most times, if the money was enough, they went back to Mexico or wherever they came from until the smoke cleared and then they were right back under another name doing the same thing again to some unsuspecting citizen. Sure it is the primary fault of the customer for hiring them in the first place without the proper bonds and insurance but greed gets to them and they think they will save money. They end up with bad workmnship or nothing and then they have a bad taste in their mouth for Contractors. Greed on the customers part is the problem but human nature causes them to take the chance in most cases and Contractors in general get the blame making it really hard to make a living. Those who do it right and legally can't compete in a market flooded with illegal aliens and I'm sure it's the same for anyone who tries to deal with them, whether it be employers or private cotizens.

Needless to say, what makes the internet so effective, is that you can send this website to your friends and tell them to sign up. The effect is exponential - tell them to tell 5 of their friends, who tell 5 of their friends.
Don't forget - the 1st bailout failed because FINALLY so many Americans were so angry that legislators were flooded with messages. Tell your friends about these illegal immigration issues and encourage them to sign up to this website and send messages to their legislators - it's so easy now. Democracy works....if you use it!

This doesn't affect only the blue-collar workers either. Here where I live, the gaming industry is most everyone's source of income. We are a small community, about 5500 people isolated from anything by about 130 miles in any direction.
Illegals, along with foreign "exchange" students (?) have been being hired for several years now taking up security, money handler, surveillance, etc. type jobs from the legal locals. When these jobs are taken up, there is no alternative for the locals other than move to another city, as there are basically no other jobs available.
It has caused a big change in the demographics of not only the work force, but the schools, churches, and everything else.

I recently needed to replace the roof on my house. I ended up doing it myself, with the help of a friend.
I told every contractor that came to bid on it that this is an English only job. I would not tolerate any language but English to be spoken on my property. If anyone spoke anything but English they would be kicked off the property.
Not one of 6 different contractors returned a bid on the job.

Evidently these Evangelicals that are recommending legalization of all of these illegal aliens haven't the slightest idea as to what harm legalizing them would do. Not only to the labor factor in the United States, but the economy in geneeral.
If these illegal aliens are legalized we might as well remove all border barriers between here and Mexico as there are untold millions that are anzxious to come to America. Our economy is not sufficient to provide health care and/or Social Security to untold millions more. We need to provide for our U.S. citizens and if these illegal aliens want to reside in the United States legally, they should follow the required procedures for legtal entry.

Their impact, since 1986, has been much worse.
Potential LEGAL immigrants (including myself between 1997 and 1999) have had to pay the stiff price (through unreasonable wait-times) as "adjustment" for this foolish act by Reagan--which encouraged a far-larger number to enter US illegally, contributing greatly to current problems.
Basically, US should deport all aliens found obviously overstaying (having made no attempt to renew/extend) existing visas or who are present without completing necessary paperworks--if they have produced "anchor-babies", then "family-separation" sob-stories should not elicit pity!

We Need E-Verify In Place And Made Mandatory For All Employers - Especially Contractors Who Are The Biggest Ofenders Of Employing Illegal immigrants Who Are Willing To Work For Less In Order To Just Survive - So That The Contractors Can Put More Money In Their Pockets. This Is Wrong And Needs To Be Stopped, This Is Putting A Big Strain On Our Economy Because Us Americans Are Losing Jobs To This Unethical & What Should Be Illegal Business Practice, And Most Likely Our Federal, State & Local Revenues If Collected At All, Are Not Being Paid By These Employers And Most definaley The Illegal Immigrants Because Of Their Inability To File Taxes. I find the quality issue to be very important. I bought this house three years ago. I was doing considerable remodeling work and had a terrible time getting qualitiy work out of the contractor and his subs who hired many illegals. The painters did not prep the work or mask off for spraying. The floor people made the front stairs different than the back stairs and refused to start over, not to mention the calls to Mexico. Once the house was clean and we were not yet moved in, I found illegals with a table saw in my entry working on the staircase. I ordered them outside.
The problem is that many of the illegals intend to eventually return home and are not concerned with establishing a reputation. I also think they lie about their skills in order to get work. I have spent a lot of money correcting what the original builder did wrong--principally masonry.
I make it a point to ask if tradesmen hire illegals. If they do I do not hire. I now have a contractor who has one illegal and who does most of the work himself. My housekeeper is getting her papers, otherwise I would not have hired her. Yard and pool people are probably illegal but they do a good job and I am satisfied. It is kind of a "don't ask-don't tell" situation here in Texas. With a little diligence, one can find quality work.

Most of the problem is that people in America support this by doing just what Sharon has done. Don't ask don't tell indeed. You need to make a stand and not hire anybody that has illegal aliens working for them... Period. Also look at all the labels and only buy products made in USA period.

I have been in the construction industry for twenty years right here in Texas. When I started out as a carpenter it was a good job with room for advancement. I am now working for a construction Mangagement company and have seen a huge decline of young american men and women intering the constuction "trade" business and it is because the carpenter trade that I started in is still making about the same amount of money. Why? because of illegal workers coming over and working for less money. I am working on a bid right now and I can not get any contractors to bid the work because this particular client does background checks on all the contractors workers and wants to see everyones
social security card. It is sad to see what used to be a proud trade become so weak.

We Don't Need No Foreign Workers
During my parents' era there was 1.2 worker per household [now its like 1.4]; and we made our house, almost everything in the house and the car in the driveway too....with far less workers/household than today. My dad and all the other households too, had plenty of vacation time to take us kids to Disneyland in the '63 Polara too. America's population was about 150M-200M back then; about half of today's population. And we need more overpopulation today?
I'd add too, a stay at home parent watching the kids [could be mom or dad] generally makes today's daycares a complete joke, quality-wise too. Ask any family socialogist or psychologist; they'll totally agree with me.
Its in China's, Europe's, Japan's, S. Korea's, etc., best interest that America start making about half their stuff [50% maufactured $ items used in America] again. We've reached the last chapter and page of debt; with phony glue board housing as a subpar manufacturing replacement. We can't buy anything from them, without a domestic wage tax base that isn't based on debt.
If these foreign countries have a brain, they'll totally agree with me.
Also, under the Obama/Bush plans; the American industrial base is just suppose to appear out of nowhere, as alleged bright technicals/businessmen start hiring for new ventures. LOL, the money's tight and there's no way we can compete on WTO rules with livable wages, let alone bringing in foreigners to overpopulate America and more RE price collapse.
Answer: start federal contracts with Buy American provisions for "American Manufacturing" ASAP and its much better federal money spent, than giving it away to the banksters....each theroretical American industrial base job creates 3 more Buy American jobs for material/services and all the federal tax costs for the contract(s) get repaid almost immediately and its slam dunk too :-)
Let the WTO eat cake, RE: concurrent restrictions we may likely need to implement to prevent world slave labor competition killing this American domestic stimulus plan to simultaneously revive the rest of the world's economy too.

Since we returned to the U.S. from overseas military bases in 1993, I have had a difficult time finding a job which does not require me to be bilingual. Not only do employers in the southwest require you to speak Spanish, they now want you to be able to read and write Spanish. My 15+ years of experience in all types of settings - medical, legal, accounting, schools - get me absolutely nowhere. Even my experience with the DOD gets no respect.
Almost all jobs out here (AZ and NM) where you will have any contact whatsoever with the public now have the bilingual requirement. An applicant who is bilingual, even with little or no actual experience, gets the job. In fact, in the three years we lived in Las Cruces, NM, I never even got a call for an interview, even though the jobs I applied for specified "bilingual preferred." Apparently, they should have said "bilingual REQUIRED."
The final straw came when I applied for a house cleaning job, and I was rejected because I wouldn't be able to understand my Spanish-speaking supervisor and co-workers.

There are jobs which have been created for Americans in the US under NAFTA selling goods and services to Mexico. If you sold your car or appliance when you bought a new one there is a good chance it ended up there. As there is a better binational balance of trade in between the US and Mexico I would rather see us import from Mexico under NAFTA or with value added through Mexico than the amount that we do now directly from China. A lot of the jobs which have moved to Mexico from here were jobs which were labor intensive and we might have lost to cheaper producers in other countries anyway. It is better to have the Mexican illegal aliens stay there where they are not dependent on the general American taxpayer for education and health costs than coming here where they compete with our lower skilled, our teenagers, our elderly and our minorities including Latino citizens for opportunity.

Please, I encourage everyone who is a witness to illegal aliens taking jobs or living in a house, apartment, etc. to call the ICE tipline. I have called them several times and it does help. They ask a lot of questions and you are not sure if they will take action, but my experience has been that they enforce the laws without much notice. They don't want anyone to notice, however, it is effective. You have to document the who, what, where, when, why and how. You have to be prepared with as much information as possible. When I called ICE on the apartment complex harboring illegals, it didn't happen for some time. When the dust settled, 8 workers at the apartments were fired, including the Manager and Assistant Manager. Also, dozens of families were gone overnight. One man would park his vehicle with Mexican plates at the complex, he had a parking sticker, and drive anywhere in town he wanted to. He did this for many months and then after I called he is no longer around. You have to observe details and record them. The more details you have, the more likely ICE will take action. Please call when you witness a violation.

I had a person come to work for me with proper ID, and I taught him my cabinet business. Now he has gone on his own, taken a lot of my business because of price. He can cut his price because he does not provide any benefits, does not carry workers' compensation insurance, and does not pay taxes. I did a background check and he is not who he said he was. He happens to be an illegal with dummy ID. He is an illegal from Dominican Republic and I need to know how to go about turning this guy in??

Everyone should do as we do. Whenever we need any work done, such as our new roof, windows, carpet etc. we tell them right up front that there will be no illegal aliens doing work for us. If they don't agree to our terms they don't have the job. And if they can't agree to our terms we know they do indeed hire illegal aliens and we pass the word along. If everyone would do this these scumbag employers of illegal aliens would soon be out of business.

These are sad stories. Illegal aliens have ruined the construction trades here in Texas and lowered wages for all workers. Not only have we lost jobs, we are forced to pay higher taxes so that the illegal aleeches can get free health care, free educations, free food stamps, etc.
Through NAFTA we exported 3 million jobs to Mexico. In return for our jobs, Mexico has given us 20 million illegal aliens, drugs and high crime rates.

To Robert and the rest of you,
The way you begin to change this senario is to vote them out of office. I myself joined a Tea Party activist group and it has opened my eyes to alot of the stuff that these elected oficials pull on us. I recommend you do the same. These groups are coming together across the U.S. because everybody is tired of this crap. You can be a part of the solution. There is so much you don't realize is going on, especially if you have children in school. They don't teach children about True History, The Constitution, or the Bill of Rights, just ask them if they mention them in school. But they are teaching them about Socialism, It's the Obama way.
I'm not much of a TV person, but I don't miss Glenn Beck on
the Fox channel every night. You might think he's a little crazy, but the man loves his country. I strongly urge you to follow the above recommendations and check out a TeaParty
(your town ,county,or state).com and learn to be part of the solution.

I agree with Kenneth. Glenn Beck and Tea Parties! I hadn't been very active politically until the last 5 or 6 years. I was aware, but not active. Shame on me. Now I fear that the reality of what I had been saying was coming for the past 30 years is here. We MUST speak out, and vote out those who will not do the job WE THE PEOPLE expect them to do. We must educate the uneducated in the Constitution of this land. Too many have become complacent, and willing to look the other way, as long as they are feeling no consequences. Though that is getting harder to do everyday.
My son has been displace at least twice in two areas of work due to illegals. Construction and on a road crew. The road construction crew job he was on was laid off for the winter as usual(can't pour concrete in the snow). Was told he would be called back in March or April. Due to cooler weather and rain he was told they still weren't ready. By mid-May the truth was found out that none of the eight on that crew would be coming back because 13(can't say for sure illegals - but I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday(old farm expression for not being too bright) - were hired to take their place. Eight American men with families, lost again.

Wake up Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are trying to take our great nation away from us. It is time for Americans to put new faces in Congress. We have some wonderful Representative and Senators in Congress who want nothing but the best for the hardworking unemployed American Citizens. It is time that you wake up and discern who these people are and keep them in Congress. Those members of Congress who want to grant amnesty, free healthcare, free education and other free social services to illegal aliens need to be removed from office via the voting process during the 2010 and 2012 elections.
You can’t get something for nothing and that is what this Democratic controlled Congress has promised to you. They lied to you. We are all going to have to pay higher taxes whether we know it or not. The hidden taxes will rise up and bite you. You may not feel a thing if you remain asleep, like you have been. We need to wake up and stop this now before our grandchildren have to bail this country out of the deep financial hole that Obama and the Democratic Congress has dug for this glorious nation of ours.
Approximately 15 million Americans are out of work. Congress tells us to be patient, that they have initiated all of these great bail out initiatives for our economy so the Americans can get back to work. Congress says “boy have we got a plan for you.” Well here is what I say to Congress, you need to be afraid of losing your jobs too. Because boy have the “unemployed and employed of Americans citizens” got a plan for you. We feel that you need to see how the unemployed American citizens feel. The Democratic controlled Congress has done such a poor job that they need to be fired. Get ready it is coming in the 2010 and 2012 elections.
Companies are not offering jobs to unemployed American citizens but if you are an illegal alien they have a job for you. Companies are not offering jobs to unemployed Americans. They want foreign workers who will work for minimum wages or below if these ruthless companies think they can work around American labor laws.

Re: How Illegal Immigration Impacts our Members
Chris, while I agree 100% with the premise of your article ("How Illegal Immigration Impacts our Members"), I take exception to the term "illegal immigration." The proper term is "illegal migration." The same would apply to the term "illegal immigrants," which really should be "illegal aliens."
The reason is that immigration itself is a legal process, not an illegal one. And immigrants are those who come to our Nation legally, not illegally, i.e., those who follow the law.
Therefore, if immigration is a legal process, and immigrants are those who come legally, we shouldn't put the word "illegal" in front of either one. Let's call them what they truly are: "illegal aliens." And, let's say "illegal migration" is the problem, because illegal aliens are breaking our laws and violating the proper way to immigrate into our Land.
