E-Verify (the effective program to keep illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs) now is facing danger in the Senate, as well as the House (see my previous blogs on House troubles).
The NumbersUSA Capitol Hill Team has been told that Sen. Menendez (D-N.J.) has put a "hold" on legislation to reauthorize the E-Verify workplace verification program. That means the Senate is barred from voting to keep it alive. Without a vote, E-Verify will die in November.
Our understanding is that Sen. Menendez is blocking the most effective tool against illegal immigration in order to get something else that he wants. He will allow an E-Verify vote if he is allowed to give hundreds of thousands of skilled American jobs permanently to hundreds of thousands of additional immigrants.
At a time when skilled Americans and students aspiring to those jobs are finding a depressed job market, Sen. Menendez is insisting on flooding their occupations with even more foreign workers. And if he doesn't get his way, he will take away the best tool that employers have to keep illegal foreign workers from taking jobs at every rung of the ladder, but especially at the lower-skilled job level.
This outrageously callous behavior toward American workers during a time of employment shrinkage is typical for Sen. Menendez. His lifetime immigration voting has earned him an F-minus in the category of protecting American workers from unfair foreign labor competition. And his overall career immigration-reduction grade (all categories) is an F.
When it comes to favoring foreign workers (and the greedy employers who use them to depress wages) over struggling American workers, Sen. Menendez has no shame. But we can hope to persuade his Democratic Senate colleagues that this will bring great embarrassment to them if they don't persuade Sen. Menendez to release his death grip on the E-Verify system before he chokes it to death.
NumbersUSA members, please check your Action Buffet corkboards for actions you can take to save the E-Verify system that is at the heart of Arizona, Oklahoma, Georgia and many county and city laws attempting to reduce illegal immigration in their jurisdiction.

To Jim Robb: I can't completely disregard the opinion of James1665. In a true democracy, elected officials should not hold issues concerning the welfare of Ameican citizens hostage, and in my opinion extremists have no place in a so called democratic society. As for change in New Jersey, believe me the people of New Jersey definitely want change. I have talked to MANY people and they are thorougly disgusted with NJ and its politicians. Why do you think that 57,000 citizens left NJ last year and more are expected to leave this year???? I am a lifelong resident of NJ (54 years) and I can't believe the way this state has changed! The state logo should be changed from The Garden State to The Condo State. If there is a piece of property the size of a postage stamp you can bet some builder will put something up there, preferably multi-family homes. Yes, we want change, but not the kind of change that extremist politicians want to shove down our throats!

To Linda 2537: You are SO RIGHT!!!! Right next to Menendez's picture should be a picture of our "esteemed" Gov. Corzine. He's out to cut the state debt, by doing away with programs that affect mostly middle to lower income families. He did however, borrow 3.9 billion dollars for NEW SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION! Hmmm with so many people leaving NJ each year, last year approx. 57,000 and more expected this year why would we need more new schools??? Oh, that's right, for the MANY children of the ILLEGALS! Silly me, how could I possibly forget that this country rewards ILLEGAL ALIENS!

Senator Mendez would be crucified by the Latino community if he ever went along with any bill that would curtail the expansion of illegal alien entry into this country.
He is one of the homie's so to speak, and will cater to their needs before he ever considers the negative economic effect it causes to the rest of America.

Dear Sharon, I know exactly how you feel. I, too, have sent faxes, letters, made phone calls to both Maryland Senators and to my representative. All are far left liberals and have Fs on their immigration voting records. Nothing can change them. I keep trying, hoping to wear them down, but I am the one who is getting worn down. All I can say, is - keep trying. We must save our nation from the illegal invaders who are snatching everything they can grab for themselves at the expense of hard-working American citizens. Our representatives do not represent us. The best we can do is vote against them and try and persuade our friends and acquaintances to do the same. Keep the faith and hope for the best. Sincerely, Ruth Ellsworth
RESPONSE FROM ROY: I agree that many of these elected officials are almost impossible to get a good vote from them. But it really is worth it to keep phoning and faxing week after week. Even if all you do is wear them down enough that they are a little less enthusiastic to do bad things, you will have contributed toward an overall better situation. The last thing we want is for people like Menendez to tell their colleagues that they rarely hear complaints.

I live in Sen. Menendez's district and I can tell you he will NEVER change his stance.
Here in rural and semi-rural South Jersey all one has to do is look around you and the farms, feed stores, lawn services etc. have employed people who know little or no English. It is almost a sure bet that employers look the other way regarding whether or not they are illegals.
Menendez has the hispanic vote locked up. Also, he will never go against the businesses and others who have been funding his campaigns from day 1. For these reasons alone--and I hate to be so pessimistic--he will never, ever, reverse all the harm he is doing to US workers.
I have sent fax after fax, but when it comes to Menendez, it is a given that he will remain solid as a rock. I'm not saying don't do it, but realize that you are making a statement and nothing more. Ditto for Lautenberg. Sad but true, they are no longer responsive to the people and the best interest of the districts they serve. :(

You are certainly right Donald but as one who has voted for third party candidates or "unpopular" ones in the past, voting for Nader may feel good but it won't help. Politics is really local and living here in la la land, trying to replace the likes of Feinstein, Boxer, Palosi and Tauscher is very frustrating. Until this house of cards totally colapses we are stuck in a rut.

I've been hammering my congressman about this since the beginning. Hank Johnson. 4th district, Ga. He won't budge. He's a Democrat playing piece. Nothing more. It is amazing that he has NO competition in the upcoming elections. I would like a congressperson that wouldn't have to be threatened with getting voted out of office, to do the right thing. E-verify should not even be necessary. But thanks to the failure of past, (snort), lawmakers, the need is obvious now.

This weekend I will fax Senator Menendez about his hold on E-verify and will call his office Monday. What I would like to know is if Menendez is able to hold up E-verify and it dies in November, will that nullify the E-verify law that was passed in Arizona and other states? Could other states vote E-verify into law and enforce it if it isn't reauthorized in November?

Why is it that we cannot get a permanent E-Verify program?
You know, this whole immigration situation is getting totally ridiculous. Almost on a daily basis, Numbers USA sends out notices of faxes and phone calls that they wish to have us members send, so how come after all of these faxes, phone calls, petitions, nothing seems to have been accomplished?
According to all pols I have seen over the past two years, the vast majority of American citizens want the border fence built and they want ALL of the illegal immigrants deported (not just those that commit violent crimes), but yet nothing is done, and every thing stays the same.
I have been a member of the Conservative Party for more than 30 years now, and I don't know of a single cause that we have ever won. If any of you other members of Numbers USA can tell me of any thing we have won, I would be happy to know.
We are NOT winning this one either. If everything has to be reauthorized, and if Congress can be allowed to continuously ignore the will of the people by first voting to build a border fence, then secretly vote to pull the funding for the fence, and as long as our federal government will permit states to set up "Sanctuary Cities", as long as our government is going to continue to allow illegals to receive all sorts of benefits, such as free medical/dental care, low income housing, free public school education or low in-state college tuition, food stamps, etc., paid for by the taxes of legal U.S. citizens, as long as our government allows employers to continue hiring illegals, and as long as our elected officials are going to be allowed to sell out American citizens to special interest groups (both foreign and domestic) there is no way we will ever win this illegal immigration battle and we are all wasting our time, and it won't be much longer before America is lost.

As Bob0234 of Md stated, we have two reps in our state that are pro illegal/amnesty. I call and fax their offices all the time. One sends replies about how much he has done to cut illegal immigration. He voted for the worthless fence, etc., things that don't make any difference. The other never even acknowledges letters sent to her office and she was part of that (Sh)Amnesty bill that Feinstein was promoting.

While I understand Janet of New Jersey’s frustration with Senator Menendez and his less than adequate voting record, under Senate rules, every Senator has the right to speak for as long as they need and want on any particular bill, resolution, or Presidential nomination. A Senate “hold” is when a particular Senator informs his or her floor leader (in this case Majority Leader Harry Reid) that he or she does not wish for a particular bill to reach the floor for consideration. While the Majority Leader does not need to follow the Senator's wishes, it is notice that the opposing Senator may filibuster any motion to proceed. In other words, any one Senator can stop a bill in its tracks.
In regards to term limits, ultimately, the voters decide how long a Member stays in office. The best way to remove a bad apple like Senator Menendez is to remember his actions and convince the people of New Jersey to vote for his opponent in 2012. Furthermore, the best way to move legislation in Congress is to guard your vote and make sure your Member of Congress feels the political pressure surrounding reelection. Without a doubt, the best way for us to get Senator Menendez to remove is hold is to jeopardize his future election or the election of his peers and legislative Majority. The American Public has a duty to hold him accountable for his actions.

This Sen. Menendez is a representative for all foreigners, not Americans. Any representative who allows or condones illegals is committing a crime, and more than a crime he is acting in concert to commit TREASON, that is to give aid to a foreign invader, Yes INVADER, because, just think there are admittedly over 12 Million ILLEGALS in our country. These are not immigrants, that came over our borders subject to our regulations. 12 Million or more are invaders. We have been invaded. It has weakened our health care system, and is definitely affecting our economy, and stealing our tax dollars from our educational system, our social security system, and our welfare system. These ILLEGALS are not our guests as Menendez would like you to think they are. They are criminals, after all something illegal is a crime. And 12 Million is an INVASION. Wake up Americans, look around, and listen too. Have any of these illegals served in our military? Mexico approves of this invasion. It has been published in Cafifornia newspapers that Mexico wants to take back their land.

Neither the Republican nor the Democrat party and their standardbearers, Obama and McCain, are interested in halting and reversing illegal immigration. Curiously, Ralph Nader has taken a stand against illegal immigration and H1B and H2B programs. Illegal immigration is about votes and Corporate financial support to the two major parties. Illegals will vote for whomever gives them citizenship rights and financial rewards and the Corporations will give campaign money to whomever supports the importation of cheap labor...end of story. An end to illegal immigration with its destruction of the American dream for our children simply cannot be had by fulminating over the likes of Menendez, Pelosi and the rest of the pro-anmesty crowd. I have been a lifelong Republican, but here is where my vote for these "guys" stops. Look around you at what is happening and you will have to come to the conclusion that Ralph Nader is the only answer this year. Personally, I cannot stomach some of his Ol' Liberal claptrap, but if you go to his website, votenader.org, you will see that 9 out of 12 of his major issues can be supported by any average Democrat or Republican. So it is simply time to bite the bullet and put Nader in the driver's seat and "overthrow" the established "conspiracy to defeat the American dream" in Washington..a conspircay that is supported by transnational corporations hell bent on putting all of us American citizens in the poorhouse. If these facts are not enough to convince you its time for a political revolution, go to Americanworker.org and see what's happened to 40% of the African-American workers in this country who've been displaced by illegals in the workplace. Your own kids can't even get a summer job because the illegals have taken all the entry level jobs we American used to have for our kids to depend on between school years.

Sadly the immigration problem is not a one party problem although many more Democrats are proponents of open borders than Republicans. On the other hand more Republicans are driving the unlimited visa debacle. We need to forget about party loyalty and vote in anyone who is not running for office from those two parties unless we are sure their voting record has consistently been against illegal/ pro visa immigration. It's too bad we can not get a coalition of independent voters,Ron Paul voters,Independent Party and Libertarian party voters under a common cause. It's bad enough all of these illegals send the money they make back to home country and pay no taxes here. If employers would stop hiring them, they would go back to where they came from, especially if they are here illegally as so many of them are, particularly the border jumpers from Mexico, they are the worst violators. They come here and don't speak English, they don't even try.

Illegal people working is the main social issue that is eating at the fabric of America's underware. We have lots of members of Congress that do not agree that there is a 'rule of law', or that such rules are not too serious.

Having lived in Coastal So.CA most of my life, I have more than one lifetime of experiences with the illegal alien/legal immigrant/Mexican-American(elected Representatives and Senators pro-illegal alien).I'm just fed up. They're backed to run for any elected office that will be a stepping stone to a higher office. They are backed to run in those districts that are heavily Latino. Then the voters are picked up and taken to and from the polls. In fact, last week the National Latino Congress held its annual meeting in L.A., saw this on T.V news, this group pro everything Latino, stated they would be giving $5 million to register 2 million more Latino/Latina.
before this election. Some group was sponsoring a large registration of the same kind in January to enable those voters to vote in primaries. Speaking of the primaries, on 2-5-2008. Shortly before the Primary election, Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, came into the State, as if it is a part of his domain, as he has always done. He was having a meeting with the California State Legislators(only the Mexican ones). He then came to Santa Ana, CA. a sanctuary City, and replaced the Consular General with another Consular General, who had experience in New York City, Florida and Cuba. His designated duties were to attend all meetings. This info was also, from O.C. Register newspaper.
Why do you think he changed out the Consular, at voting time?
I assume this was Calderon's big kahoona.

Is there any doubt by the American people as to which party is appeasing illegal immigrants and undermining our United States Constitution? The democratic party and it's leadership are pathetic! They are destroying the very foundation of this great country and the American voter is turning a blind eye! Sad.

Re: NJ Sen. Menendez Now Blocking E-Verify
What a coward!!! His office is closed, he doesn't even have anyone to bother answerinig his phone. Additionally, his mail box is full so it is impossible to voice my concern regarding the stimulus which he is suppose to vote on tonight. I am outraged on such an important issue he can't call a job agency to get a temp to take messages. His actions are obvious and he needs to be voted out of office and get someone in who cares what Americans want. When it comes time to vote good ridence to him
