By Roy Beck, Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 9:39 PM

Mostly good news to report this evening from multiple sources in the U.S. House -- negotiators have agreed to a 5-year re-authorization of the E-Verify program to keep illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs and without the strings attached that had threatened to strangle it in future years. There are several indicators that many Members of Congress in both Parties really listened to you the citizens through your hundreds of thousands of faxes and phone calls this past week.
We are sorry that we didn't achieve the 10-year extension that E-Verify deserves after its excellent record in recent years.
But a 5-year extension will protect the program through the next President's term and provide some stability for states, counties and cities to base their actions on.
(Business lobbyists and other opponents of workplace verification systems had tried to limit the reauthorization to only 3 years.)
Most importantly for now, we have been assured that all key players in both Parties have agreed to remove language that would have allowed mischief by appropriators next year. We wanted to make certain there was no language that could have made it easy to strangle or starve the E-Verify program in the future by backroom appropriation maneuverings. We have been promised that won't be in the bill coming to the floor.
We have come to you citizen users of our NumbersUSA website a number of times this month to impress the Members of the U.S. House with how popular E-Verify is with their constituents.
More than a dozen states over the last two years have passed laws mandating the use of E-Verify to one extent or another by their state's businesses. In addition, Pres. Bush has recently ordered that all federal contractors use E-Verify. Yet, the whole E-Verify system is scheduled to end on Nov. 1 unless Congress re-authorizes it.
We always felt that too much was at stake for congressional leaders to let E-Verify die, but we have been alerting you instantly of backroom efforts to seriously weaken the program and plant seeds of vulnerability for the future. We -- and you -- have insisted on a clean bill.
Now, all indications are that the House will consider a clean bill on Wednesday -- and pass it.
Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas asked us to convey this message: "Please thank your members for their efforts. They are an amazing group of men and women."
For now, we are withdrawing our request that you call your U.S. Representative about this issue. Should there be any unexpected negative change tomorrow, we will alert you immediately.
If all goes as House Leaders plan, E-Verify will jump its House hurdle tomorrow and then go to the Senate.
Unfortunately, Sen. Menendez of New Jersey is reportedly responsible for a hold that has been placed on E-Verify. He and his staff have indicated their intention to kill E-Verify if they don't win 550,000 additional visas for permanent foreign workers to take jobs in occupations that are laying off American workers.
As soon as we see that the House action has occurred as planned, we will further mobilize American citizens to help their Senators understand that importing foreign workers in a soft job market is a poor way to campaign for re-election in the fall.
We will need 61 Senators to break Sen. Menendez' "hold." Or we'll need Senate Majority Leaders Reid and Durbin to be able to persuade Sen. Menendez that his anti-American-worker actions are embarrassing the Senate and his Party.

I'm a registered Democrat, but I expect to follow my children's lead, and start voting for Republicans. Menendez has been a huge disappointment, as has my Congressman. When I wrote to Rep. Rush to express my concerns about illegal immigrants, he wrote back to tell me how important it was to not tear families apart. Who wants to tear them apart? The entire family can go back, as a unit. To be fair, he did write back, even if I didn't much like his answer. KC

I AGREE WITH YOU BRUCE I ALSO HAVE FAXED AND PHONED TO NO AVAIL. OUR SENATOR MENENDEZ IS DEFINITELY DOING WHAT HE WANTS NOT WHAT HIS CONSTITUENTS NEED. AND UNFORTUNATELY THIS STATE WILL PROBABLY VOTE ANOTHER DEMOCRAT IN.
RESPONSE FROM JIM ROBB, NUMBERSUSA'S VICE-PRESIDENT OPERATIONS:
Reminder--NumbersUSA is not and never has been a Repubican group. OR a Democratic group. We are neither conservative NOR liberal. What we ARE FOR is reducing immigration back to traditional, moderate levels, and eliminating all illegal immigration. Any politician who agrees with that--welcome aboard!

There are a number of blogs and .org's blathering about the illegal alien problem. This one consistently makes sense with a logical approach to defining the problem, providing solutions, and is the most widely supported. It's the perfect venue for a serious proposal. Roy and his staff could develop a PAC to donate to candidates opposing those like the Sen. from NJ. I'll be the first to put $500 on my debit card.

This is more a question than a comment, and it's directed more at you, Roy, although I'd welcome comments from some of the other bloggers: Is Numbers USA planning any rallies near the Democratic convention when it meets in Denver? RightMarch and the Minutemen seem to be having a big one, right across the convention center. Here we are, less than a month away, and I can't find any reference on your web to anything happening --on our part, or anyone else's-- during the convention. If I've missed some piece of opinion or information from you, please tell me where I can access it. I'm planning to attend, regardless, because I believe words have to be backed up with action. So, if some folks out of Dallas want to share a ride (or add me to theirs), please let me know --ASAP. Muchas Gracias.

E-verify will work only if you can use it to prescreen applicants. Post-hiring checks are useless because there are other state laws that have to be considered.

I just heard on the news that Chicago is seriously "in the hole" and wonder how much of this deficit is attributable to Chicago being a sanctuary city. Also, with Cook County now having the highest sales tax in the nation (over 11 percent in Chicago), I wonder how much of Cook's deficit is the result of providing free health care at the county hospitals due to illegals. When will politicians in Illinois wake up and admit that providing medical and educational services to illegals costs the state billions of dollars? Illinois is also seriously "in the hole." I am supporting Steve Sauerberg, running against Durbin, and Rep. Mark Kirk is already "on board."

Here in Wisconsin we are loaded with illegal immigrants. You don't hear anything about this in the media. Many thousands of our citizens have lost their jobs to the illegals. You can hardly make a telephone call to any business entity here without hearing a recorded message, "For English press '1', for Spanish press '2'." It absolutely infuriates me when that happens. My grandparents immigrated to Wisconsin from Denmark legally in the 1880s. My paternal grandfather was a journeyman sheet metal worker when he came and found work here in his trade. My maternal grandfather found a job in a factory as a laborer. He saved his money and after a few years he had enough to open a confectionary store, and later one of the first nickelodeon theaters in Wisconsin. All four of my grandparents learned to speak, read, and write English. They had a rule in their housholds that only English was to be spoken. This enabled them and their children to blend in more easily in Wisconsin every day life. They never became wealthy. They remained just plain hard working Wisconsin citizens all of their lives. If they were still living they would be outraged at this illegal immigrant problem we are suffering through. Also, they would feel sad for Wisconsin and for America.

I have been calling Senator Menendez's office every single day for a week. I will continue to call until he lifts his hold. This is ridiculous that one Senator can hold a bill hostage until he gets what he wants, which in this case, is more foreign workers. In my message to his staffer, I say that the Democrats promise more jobs, but actions speak louder than words, and this hold deprives Americans at both ends of the spectrum: high skill and low skill (illegals). I also remind him there is a presidential election coming up. I have called the Senate Minority Leader and asked what he was doing, and his staffer told me to call Harry Reid! Can you believe this? So, I did, for all the good that does. He is so corrupt it makes my ear tingle just calling his office. Yuck. I urge my fellow NumbersUSA members to start calling Menendez and remind him this will be remembered come Nov 7th.

Roy, at this point I'm grateful for the 5 years for E-Verify. I believe we can marshall our efforts in the future to make it a permanent requirement for all... if we can make believers of our senators. I thank God for all of you at NumbersUSA and all of my fellow Americans who continue to lend their time and effort and names to our ongoing efforts. Too many of those in Congress think they are above any accounting to We, The People and Menendez is one of them. Since Menendez has been in office he has NEVER responded to any of my faxes or calls (and there have been many)and his staffers are curt and uncomfortable listening to a constituent who points out that their boss is holding E-Verify hostage against the wishes of his constituents and abdicating his responsibility to We, The People who pay his salary and is not honoring his oath of office. I have made mention of the fact that his future hinges on our future and if he continues to flagrently disregard our wishes, we have remedies for that... There are actions and pronouncements being made which we might consider treasonous and anarchistic, not to mention seditious. Doesn't anyone remember that there are laws to deal with those things? Well, we'll continue to fight the good fight and make our voices heard and pray very hard that we'll prevail. We have to. We have honor and integrity on our side.

This is just the beginning we still need the senate to pass it. Keep the pressure on. Senator Boxer is my rep. a lost cause! Other things we need to work on is to get legal immigrants paid the same as Americans to prove that business is using immigration for one purpose only cheap labor! And impose a infrastructure tax on the employers of all immigrants legal or illegal.

Fantastic !!! The system stays alive. Hey why do we have to constantly keep propping up these idiots in Congress to do the right thing? Well, I suppose we could go on ad infinitum with all the sobering theories. But what happens when three states get serious about passing this worker ID system into law and one of them forgets to enforce it as in the case of good ole Georgia. Take a look at the story someone posted on Fire Society: http://www.firesociety.com/forum/thread/26884/Georgia---Governments-fail... The tide of Mexican incursion here in the Capitol is only rising higher. In fact, I heard one wise guy refer to this town as "Aztlanta." That got me pretty hot under the collar. So, I faxed the whole state legislation the following steam valve form letter:
Good Day Representative,
A recent evaluation of Georgia's adherence to the SAVE system revealed that thus far a total of nine Georgia employment entities have applied for the E-Verify program. We the Georgia citizenry find this severe and extreme lack of compliance and ENFORCEMENT of the expressed provisions of S.B. 529 completely OUTRAGEOUS. We insist that either you and your colleagues begin a realistic and comprehensive effort to making sure ALL Georgia employers comply with this LAW ON THE BOOKS or prepare to see a state wide "Grassroots" commitment to voting out all the incumbents in the Legislature who remain ineffective on the issue. Remember, a whole state full of new and generational Georgians held out big hopes on S.B. 529 for their personal solution to the growing problem of the overwhelming invasion of illegal immigrants throughout OUR country. Don't delude yourself into thinking we will accept apathy on your part in response. You'd be surprised how many of your constituents know the unsettling facts about this mass lethargy from our local government representatives. And we also know we expect better results in enforcement by the full effect date of 7/1/09. Enough said.

The comment you made about our responsibility never ending on the day of our vote is of critical importance. Thanks for reminding us all of that.
Isn't it amazing that our senators and congressmen don't see this illegal immigration for what it is. It seems like many hide behind their local needs for re-election than our real American need to control imports of too many illegal aliens and a policy of controlled growth of immigrants.
The politics of Democrats is easy to see thru especially from states that do not have the illegal alien situation as yet (but will have shortly if the AMerican people don't stop the floodwaters of immigrants on a yearly basis)
They have such lame see thru excuses just to stay with the party line for more votes-- it makes one sick when you see their wrong policies in writing from such supposedly smart people!!!

I must agree with my fellow Americans. I do not understand the problem some have with E-Verify use on legal U.S. citizens.
If you are legally allowed to work here, than why should you fear E-Verify? Sure there might be some bugs in the system, but they can only be fixed if we use the system.
Once an error is found you should have no more trouble. I know if someone were using my Social Security number illegally, Than I would certainly want it stopped.

Glad we didn't lose it all, yet!! The american citizen has been accepting less than we deserve on all issues to the point that if we lose now, nothing is left to lose.I have walked the halls of congress and know how they operate. It is a shame that we have to work so hard, plead and beg for our elected officials to do what's right for america and it's workers. Big oil,big drug and other companies run this country. Our government has become an arm for them. WE have a government problem and both political parties are at fault. It hasn't happened over night and it will be hard to change washington's mindset. I will not vote for any candidate who steps on our citizen's and helps destroy our country. We have given away so many of our freedom's that we don't have any more to give. Yesterday I saw where buisness's owe 58 billion in S.S. taxes over the last 10 years.Wonder if they will go after them like they do individuals. I will keep calling, writing, faxing ,pleading and beging our congress to do what's right. I just received an extremely disturbing email from Sledgehammer stating that the E-Verify is the brain child of Homeland Security and they will use E-Verify for Legal U.S. citizens??? Is this true; if it is true than can demand that E-Verify is strictly for checking the status of Immigration NOT Legal U.S.??? How can I send you the email to share it with you! I DO NOT want this backfiring on Legal U.S.....
RESPONSE FROM ROY: Yes, E-Verify is for every worker. If you don't use it on every worker, all an illegal alien has to do is say he is a U.S. citizen and he is in free.
But privacy complaints about E-Verify are completely unwarranted, once you look at the facts. And you don't just have NumbersUSA to trust. One of the most vigorous protectors of privacy in America has been Phyllis Schlafly and the Eagle Forum. Both fully endorse E-Verify and making it mandatory for every employer.
Here is the deal: E-Verify doesn't require one piece of information about a new hire that the employer doesn't already have to submit to the Social Security Administration and IRS. There is no additional database. The feds for decades have known where we work. Think about it.
E-Verify was started long before DHS. It was created by Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) who has been the most consistent champion against illegal immigration since 1989. E-Verify is endorsed by virtually every Member of the Immigration Reform Caucus as the most important tool to fight illegal immigration. Look at the Members of the Caucus and see if you believe all those Members would favor something that would threaten the privacy or American citizens or create some kind of Big Brother operation.
I'm taking this much time to respond because the information and analysis provided by Sledgehammer is so thoroughly wrong and at odds with most of the political leaders who stand guard over immigration and privacy concerns.
The lobbyists for big business fight E-Verify and try to cast aspersions on it because it is increasingly being used by states to stop the hiring of illegal foreign labor. But the National Federation of Independent Businesses which represents the small businesses of America has endorsed making E-Verify mandatory. Obviously, E-Verify can't be much of a burden if the small business owners of America want it.

Senator Menendez needs to be removed from the Senate.
Any elected person who is willing to make it hard for the American citizen to get a job, by allowing or demanding visas for foreigners. Is not a representative of the People. Therefore, Menendez is in violation of his oath of office pledge and so are any others who vote for visas.
"We the People" are the sovereign government of America,
The President,Senators,Congressmen/Congresswomen,and the elected are SERVANTS, not bosses of the "Government by the People, and of the People."
When they do not represent "WE the People" they have violated the Honest intent of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Who would not be grateful for this victory whose purpose is to protect Americans from being stampeded by purely Un-American initiatives like Immigration, coming out of our Congress?..We need to keep fighting hard for the rule of law vs. illegal entry into the USA.We need to work for a system that makes it virtually impossible for illegal aliens to enter the USA. E-VERIFY can help identify those in the job market but what about those day-laborers and those working under independent contractor status? We know from experience that they can and will find a way to beat the system either themselves or with the guidance of citizens within who believe in and are working for amnesty....

Yes, we held off some more bad news, but we didn't "win" anything here. We just didn't "lose" as badly as we could have.
We need to go on the offensive and get the SAVE Act passed. We have a half million members, we should be able to effectively shut down the capitol switchboard with calls. Pelosi's office should not be able to call out for pizza!
Let's step up this fight!
