Federal E-Verify

Overview

In the fall of 2008, Pres. George W. Bush signed an executive order requiring all businesses contracting with the federal government to screen new hires using E-Verify. The workplace verification tool administered by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services verifies an employee's identity with federal data. Independent studies show E-Verify to confirm 96% of all cases.

Pres. Bush later delayed the mandatory usage of E-Verify while legal objections were getting resolved. It has been delayed two more times under Pres. Barack Obama.

Rep. Heath Shuler's SAVE Act requires the mandatory nationwide use of E-Verify for all private and public employers.

Last week the Department of Labor issued a grim report on the state of jobs in America. More than 500,000 Americans lost their job in November and more than 2 million so far in 2008. In response, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-Texas) issued a statement urging the Senate to pass a long-term extension of E-Verify. Take action now by calling and/or faxing your Senator and asking them to add an amendment to the auto industry bailout to attach H.R. 6633.

Here is Rep. Smith's statement from Friday...

The number of American jobs continues to fall at a staggering rate. Today, the Department of Labor reported that 10.3 million American workers are looking for jobs. In November alone, the Department reported that 533,000 jobs were lost and unemployment increased to 6.7 percent.

At the same time, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, an estimated seven million jobs are held by illegal immigrants.

Given the current state of the economy, Congress must support policies that help U.S. citizens, legal immigrants and employers who play by the rules. The Senate can and should immediately pass H.R. 6633, a long-term extension of E-Verify, the federal government's system that allows businesses to ensure that the employees they hire are legal.

This important program helps preserve American jobs for American workers. With millions of Americans currently unemployed, Congress cannot allow E-Verify to expire.

H.R. 6633 passed the House in a 407-2 bipartisan vote. The Senate must prioritize the needs of American workers by setting politics aside and voting to pass E-Verify.

Sen. Jeff Sessions will replace Arlen Specter on judiciary committee

Quoted - Tuesday, May 5, 2009

He's a major proponent of E-Verify, the voluntary government program that allows employers to certify whether prospective workers are legally authorized to work in the United States. During the debate over the federal stimulus bill in February, Sessions led a failed bid to add amendments that would have forced federal contractors receiving stimulus funds to use the E-Verify program.

"Now we have the No. 1 champion for the American workers on immigration issues being the ranking member," said Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, an immigration-reduction advocacy group.

Employer use of federal E-Verify program on the rise

In the News - Wednesday, June 24, 2009

The voluntary federal program has seen a rapid growth in use this year, Department of Homeland Security records show. More than 1,000 employers are signing up each week on average, and employment checks are approaching 200,000 a week.

Grassley presses Obama administration on E-Verify

In the News - Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Because the Obama administration has slowed the implementation of a 2007 executive order signed by Pres. George W. Bush that would have mandated federal contractors and subcontractors use an otherwise voluntary work authorization database, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley hopes Congress will make the process law.

Grassley, a longtime supporter of the program now known as E-Verify, has introduced an amendment that would require any entity that enters into a contract with the federal government to participate in the E-Verify program.

E-Verify works, so, of course, let's not use it

In the News - Friday, June 5, 2009

With billions of your federal tax dollars gushing forth from Washington -- as part of President Barack Obama's stimulus bill to put Americans back to work -- wouldn't it be nice if someone invented a special magic faucet?

A magic faucet to compel those federal contractors doing all the hiring with all that federal money to make certain the jobs go to people who are legally entitled to work in the United States.

More companies use immigration database

In the News - Monday, June 1, 2009

What do Continental Airlines, the Houston Ballet, the city of Dallas and Sen. John Cornyn all have in common?

They all use the federal government’s E-Verify program to check if their employees are authorized to work in the U.S. legally.

A Department of Homeland Security database of the more than 118,000 public, private and government employers enrolled in E-Verify as of May 1 shows companies big (Tyson Foods) and small (the Ballard Street Café in Wylie) are signed up for the program.

Italy: Berlusconi urges US immigration model

In the News - Monday, May 25, 2009

"Italy's conservative prime minister Silvio Berlusconi has sought to deflect criticism of Italy's harsh immigration policies by stressing potential migrants are welcome in his country. In an interview posted to the US television network CNN's website on Monday, he said immigrants who qualified to come to Italy should be allowed to work and create a better life for themselves and their families.

"We welcome those (immigrants) who have the right to come here. This is what the United States and all normal countries do," Berlusconi told CNN.

"We are absolutely open to those who come to our country with the wish to integrate and to work... we keep an open door to all who are eligible to come to work in Italy or request asylum," Berlusconi said."

Missouri lawmakers vote to reject federal Real ID Act

In the News - Wednesday, May 13, 2009

"Missouri lawmakers on Wednesday voted to direct the Department of Revenue to not comply with federal driver’s license requirements.

The federal Real ID Act, passed in 2005, requires states to collect and verify certain information about applicants for driver’s licenses and state ID cards. It was passed in response to national security concerns after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

But some Missouri lawmakers argue Real ID is an unwelcome intrusion into privacy and requires several new technologies that could increase the risk of identity theft...."

Criminal aliens getting more ICE attention

In the News - Tuesday, May 12, 2009

"Calls for U.S. immigration officials to concentrate on deporting more illegal aliens who have serious criminal records are showing results, police say.

A new program at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency -- called Secure Communities -- is netting aliens for deportation when they are arrested for crimes by police in 48 communities, USA Today reported Tuesday.

The program was established in response to criticism of ICE during the Bush administration. Observers said the agency concentrated too much on mass deportations of immigrant workers picked up during raids on work places instead of targeting violent illegal aliens who commit crimes, the newspaper said...."

Women, minorities fear being left out of stimulus projects
